Subject: Include a hook script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d to start xscreensaver via Xsession
Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2006 21:41:20 +0530
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 4.23-4
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

It would be good to be able to start xscreensaver by Xsession via a hook
script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d.

The attached script ...

1. Checks for xscreensaver-command, xscreensaver and executes
"xscreensaver-command -exit" and "xscreensaver -nosplash" in the
background (as recommended in the xscreensaver(1))

2. Follows the conventions specified in Xsession(5) for "CUSTOMIZING THE
STARTUP PROCEDURE".

Subject: Please revert this awful feature or fix it.
Date: Sat, 3 Oct 2009 13:13:06 -0400
After the latest xscreensaver version which includes this "feature",
I now have xscreensaver being started when X is started no matter what
user logs in. That is unacceptable since when I have mythtv logged in I
specifically do not want a screensaver, and I already made sure I don't
have one by using a custom .xsession. Now all of a sudden I have a
screensaver being forced on me just by installing the xscreensaver
pacakge (which is a nice screensaver to have, just not for all users
with no way to disable it).

At the very least it should be possible to set an environment in the
.xsession or similar to prevent xscreensaver from starting. Starting it
without exception is not acceptable.

Besides there are other screensavers out there that some users may choose
to run instead (like the gnome and kde screensavers).

I would prefer this bad change be reverted ASAP though.

You have succeeded. At least the world of debian unstable users.

Great.

It really does seem like letting the desktop manager or .xsession or
something else decide which screensaver to run is nicer.

Subject: This new behaviour is really annoying and really should be totally reverted as a horrible idea.
Date: Sat, 21 Nov 2009 18:55:08 -0500
Having xscreensaver autostart is just wrong. The way to disable it is
way too complicated for most users to understand, and it still interferes
with kde and gnome's own screensaver setups.

Please revert this completely and never do it again. It is simply the
wrong way to do things.

Every desktop manager has a way to start and select screensavers. Having
xscreensaver but in the way simply annoys users and confuses everyone.
it is easy to enable xscreensaver from any window manager and desktop.
It is currently very hard to prevent xscreensaver from running. hence the
current setup is just wrong. Wrong wrong wrong.

I totally agree. Most users have gnome or kde and they are totally confused
when they find that their screensaver settings are not honored. I was confused
myself too, it took me a week to find out that xscreensaver was running.

I am a kde user, so I can talk about what a kde user faces with this setup:
1) KDE screensaver settings are not honored. Setting a different screesaver, a
different timeout, disabling screensaver, they all don't work because
xscreensaver always kicks in.
2) Mplayer and other video players do not stop xscreensaver for some reason
(probably because they attempt to stop kscreensaver as they are running inside
kde?), so you get screensavers right in the middle of movies... :@

To fix this, a user has to:
1) Find xscreensaver in the output of ps and realize that xscreensaver is not
part of KDE. (Do you really expect an average user to be able to do that??)
2) Either disable it by using the complicated method with the desktop files
(which requires looking in this bug report to find instructions), or purge it.

So, I think autostarting xscreensaver is just wrong and must be reverted asap.
Users that use xscreensaver are probably advanced enough to know how to make
xscreensaver autostart.

Regards,
George

Please revert this crap now so we can actually start controlling our
screensaver settings again.

We have now had xscreensaver forced on us for 3 months. This is getting
rediculous. All that has to be done is remove the crap that the previous
version added to the package.

This is breaking kde screensaver users, probably gnome screensaver users,
and who knows who else.

I am an xscreensaver user and I didn't know anything about autostart
this morning. I was pretty annoyed to realize that the last upgrade
broke my screensaver without notice, and caused my session not to lock
when I asked it to etc.

Also, here in gnome there is a dialog in System > Preferences > Startup
applications, which allows to configure autostart I'm founding out, if
I understand correctly? If you don't want xscreensaver to start, just
untick the box.

So I find pretty spurious your claims about my being better off without
autostart. Thankfully by now I learned to check README.Debian files,
and I found instructions to fix it by myself, but it would be great if
it could work out of the box for any clueless user. Perhaps a debconf
dialog could help?

Regards,
