I have posted a RFC in May[1]. But there's probably a license issue
with the OMG files. I have started collecting information on this
and still have to send an email to debian-legal@

Hi,

are there any news on this?

Thomas, did you get around to sort out the assumed licensing issue?

jacORB 2.3.0 has been released on Feb 17th 2007, maybe it's worth giving
it another look?

Hello Moritz,

packaging JacORB is still on my TODO list. Actually it's now on top
of it :-)

> Thomas, did you get around to sort out the assumed licensing issue?

Nope. From my understanding the JacORB org.omg.* classes in the tarball
are not DFSG free. I'll post an email to the JacORB mailing list soon.

It seems doable to either use some GNU Classpath classes, or to use classes
from OpenORB.

Sure.

I have not, but I'm still interested in seing JacORB in Debian.

Your interest for JacORB is quite motivating, and as we have set up a
Debian CORBA Team, would you be interested in stepping in and joining
the team?

Thomas

In fact in my institut we are using a control system based on CORBA.
you can find information on http://www.tango-controls.org
The GUI interface is based on java so my JacORB interest.

Did you spoke with the jacorb upstream about this licence issue ?

Do you think that tango could be included in the Debian CORBA Team.

Not yet. I have to check whether the issue is still relevant with the
latest version of JacORB, and have a look at how it is dealt with in
OpenJDK.

I've just had a look at the Tango in a Nutshell presentation, and
it seems it's indeed very related to CORBA :-)

IIRC, you have filed an ITP bug on Tango, right? I'll gladly add you to
the pkg-corba team so that you can use our infrastructure for Tango
packaging.

Subject: ITP: jacorb -- a free Java implementation of the OMG's CORBA standard
Date: Mon, 21 Dec 2009 01:05:01 +0100
Hi,

I have got some interest in JacORB, too. I put some effort into
debianizing JacORB release 3.4.1.

I read about the JacORB issue from 2006, and the reason JacORB did not
find its way into Debian yet.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=349540

As mentioned in the discussion, there's probably a license issue with
the OMG files. This turned out to be true also for latest release. So I
replaced those OMG files by the equivalent files shipped with OpenJDK and
different license terms,
which should be fine in terms of licensing.

AFAICS, this would enable JacORB being shipped with Debian distribution.

I prepared a launchpad package for Jaunty for installation, currently
without notification service compiled into, due to some other unresolved
library-dependency.

https://launchpad.net/~debian-icoup-consulting/+archive/ppa

This package might be a good starting point to drive JacORB integration
forward.

Comments are welcome.

Regards, Flib

noowner 349540
thanks

Hi,

This is an automatic email to change the status of jacorb back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 6 months.

If you are still interested in adopting jacorb, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

retitle 349540 ITP: jacorb -- a free Java implementation of the OMG's CORBA standard
 owner 349540 !
 thanks

However, it is not recommended to keep ITP for a long time without acting on
the package, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to refrain from
packaging that software. It is also a good idea to document your progress on
this ITP from time to time, by mailing <349540@bugs.debian.org>.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,
