Subject: apt-get update error downloading from http servers
Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 01:40:30 +0000
Package: apt
Version: 0.6.43

I run debian testing with linux kernel 2.6.11 version.
My /etc/sources.list includes the following lines:

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-non-US/ testing/non-US main contrib
non-free

Few days ago I updated my machine with the canonical "apt-get update;
apt-get upgrade" and everything went ok.

Today I tried to install a package and I got a strange error. (I'm
sorry I dont remember which one). After than I decided to re-run
"apt-get update" only. I always recieve the following error:

root@scatola:~# apt-get update
Err http://ftp.de.debian.org testing Release.gpg
  Connection failed
Err http://ftp.de.debian.org testing/main Translation-it
  Connection failed
Err http://ftp.de.debian.org testing/contrib Translation-it
  Connection failed
Err http://ftp.de.debian.org testing/non-free Translation-it
  Connection failed

I tried to change mirror (http://ftp.it.debian.org,
http://ftp.us.debian.org) and I have always the same error.
For sure I used firefox for browse repositories server and
they are ok.
If I use an ftp server repository instead of an http ones, I can
see any mistakes.

ftp server just run greats, http server no.

I don't know if it has to consider as a bug. I hope this information
could be useful.

Thank you for your job. You are simply the best. :-) (always)

Subject: dpkg-buildpackage error
Date: Wed, 28 Dec 2005 01:57:35 +0000
Package: apt
Version: 0.6.43

I did "apt-get source apt" (ftp server works well) and then
dpkg-buildpackage but I recieve this error on compile time:

/bin/sh: -c: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `doecho'
/bin/sh: -c: line 1: `echo "Updating $lang.po"; \'
make[2]: *** [update-po] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/packages/apt-0.6.43/po'
make[1]: *** [binary] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/packages/apt-0.6.43'
make: *** [build/build-stamp] Error 2

I looked at /usr/src/packages/apt-0.6.43/po/makefile, from line 67 to line
74 there is the following piece of code:

67 .PHONY: update-po
68 update-po: $(PACKAGE)-all.pot
69 for lang in ${LINGUAS}; do\
70 echo "Updating $$lang.po"; \
71 $(MSGMERGE) $$lang.po $(PACKAGE)-all.pot -o $$lang.new.po; \
72        cmp $$lang.new.po $$lang.po || cp $$lang.new.po $$lang.po; \
73 rm -f $$lang.new.po; \
74 done

At line 69 the slash "\" is not used in a right way I suppose. a blank is needed
between the token "do" and "\".
Correct line should be:

69 for lang in ${LINGUAS}; do \

I downloaded also the package "apt" from the experimental brunch. It has the same
problem. Evenif with a re-compiled package I have the same bug with http server.

Thanks for the attention,
Marco Verdecchia

This errors below look like you installed apt from
debian/experimental. The support for Translation-$lang files is only
available there.

[..]

Can you please run:
# apt-get update -o Debug::Acquire::http=true
and attach the result (as a gziped file).

Cheers,
 Michael

Hello Marco.

Is this problem resolved for you in recent versions (>= 0.7.16) of apt?

Nine years of no response to an unreprodicible bug suggests that the
problem was solved in the meantime… closing.
