Justification: breaks the whole system


Upon loading the X Window System (xserver-xorg, specifically), the
system becomes unusable and log files are unable to be read/determined.
Either X, startx or gdm provides this failure.  The problem exists as
well with kernels 2.6.12, 2.6.13 and 2.6.14.

This bug reoccurs everytime.  The system is rendered inoperable at the
userland level.  System responds to network ping but ssh does not work.
Sysrq requests can prevent filesystem damage: SUIESUB.

Disabling PAT results in the same problem.

The system this occurs on is a Toshiba 5105-S501 Pentium4-based laptop
with the following characteristics:

This is a primary bug report against 8178, even though it says 7676.
The same symptoms exist with the new kernel and module.  Attempted
downgrade:

apt-get remove nvidia-kernel-source nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-dev
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-source=1.0.7676-2
nvidia-glx-dev=1.0.7676-2

The above commands work just fine, but then running the following module
assistant command:

m-a a-i nvidia

proceeds to download the latest 8178 kernel source instead of using the
installed 7676-2 source!  This prevents the debian system from being
able to check on an older version that worked just fine previously.

I've tried 8178, either pre-built (from debian archive) or locally
built with module-assistant. nvidia-glx was upgraded to proper version
(8178). My card is supported by the drivers (GeForce 2Go 440, pci id
0x0174).

Attempt to start X with new nvidia.ko results in immediate hard lockup
(even before nvidia logo is shown). /var/log/Xorg.0.log does not
survive subsequent fsck or not created at all. Attempt to start X from
remote machine (over ssh) shows only first 10 or so lines of Xorg log,
which does not say anything.

I'v tried this:

* with all options for Device "nvidia" in xorg.cong commented out.

* with NvAGP set to 0, 1 or 2

* with agpgart/intel_agp loaded or without them

Every time the outcome is the same - hard lockup. Apparently,
filesystem caches are not flushed properly, since fsck reports a
lot of lost/orphaned inodes each time, and sometimes removes xorg.conf
to /lost+found. Being afraid for my filesystem integrity, I haven't
done any further checks.

Could provide you with additional info, if any is required.

Hey Dmitry, I've tried the same options with the same results.  My
kernel line is as such from grub's menu.lst:

kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-1-686 root=/dev/hda1 ro lapic
pci=routeirq

Even leaving the 'lapic' and 'pci=routeirq' options out, the problem
persists.  Both options typically yield better performance when
things are "working right".

If I run the X server (it's X.org 6.9.0) like this:

root@toshi:~# X >& X.log

I get the first 10 lines or so as well before it locks up.  Remote ssh
results in complete lockup on the userland as well as the kernel level.

And it stops there, with no errors nor warnings.  This tells me the problem could be a glibc/libc6 bug or some other library, but I am not sure how to ascertain such information.

Can you produce logs as well?  If you used ext3 to format with and use the SYSRQ combination of: SUIESUB, there should be no fscking at all.  I hold down the left 'alt' key and the 'sysrq' key (cleverly disguised as the 'PrtSc' or 'Print Screen' key) and press the SUIESUB sequence, waiting about 2-3 seconds between each key press.  This prevents fscks and the system boots up as usual.

Having exhausted all options, I went and tried to find a solution for
getting the media reader to work (it still doesn't :) ) and in the
process, found a website that describes howto get the display to go up
to 1600x1200.  I haven't tried such a feat yet and am not too anxious to
do so, but the solution to that problem was setting the NV_reg_Mobile
option.  Loading the nvidia module like this:

modprobe nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1

Will bring the X server right up.  Initially, I set it to NVreg_Mobile=0
and it returned to the console.  You can probably imagine the excitement
that set in at that point: the laptop had NOT hardlocked.  Apparantly,
NVreg_Mobile=1 needs to be set with mobile nvidia GPUs.  Perhaps a minor
change to Debian documentation could reflect this.

Please repeat and confirm that this fixes the problem.

This also seems to solve the problem for me.  If I boot (either without
X, or using "nv"), then modprobe nvidia with these options, I can then
start X (with "nvidia").

One outstanding problem: how can I force the module to the loaded with
this option at boot time?  I thought I just needed to put
nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1
in /etc/modules, but this doesn't seem to work.

Further comment: I'm not sure if I am supposed to be using nvidia-legacy
packages instead, but I can't solve all dependencies to install these on
my system (just upgraded to latest 2.6.16 and X.org 7.0).

This bug was about four and a half years old, with a workaround of setting
an option that's no longer documented in the NVIDIA documentation.  There
was no response to a ping for whether current versions were still affected
about three years ago.  I'm fairly sure that this bug is long gone, and
any subsequent problems similar to this will be from some different cause.

I'm closing this bug accordingly.
