Package: hw-detect
Version: any
Severity: wishlist
As discussed in debian-boot, hw-detect should check for dmraid arrays.
After having found the disks and loaded pertinent kernel modules, "dmraid -c
-s" should be launched to check a BIOS configured software raid.
At medium priority a debconf question about activating it should be asked and
at higher pri should be activated by default.
Tag experimental this feature.

Apparently dmraid harmlessly does nothing if the BIOS doesn't support
software RAID or if it's disabled, so is there any reason for a debconf
question? It sounds like it should just be enabled by default.
We also need a dmraid-udeb.

Hi!
Attached is a patch modifying disk-detect to enable dmraid devices
detection.
This patch does not enable full support for dmraid devices in the whole
debian-installer. Other identified aspects needing work are:
- debian-installer-utils/list-devices and mabye udevinfo
for disk and partition detections ;
also need to hide disks involved in dmraid array
- partman-base/definitions.sh
humandev device name translation
- partman-base/init.d/parted
device detection and filtering
- grub-installer, maybe lilo-installer
for grub, should be somehting like [1]:
device (hd0,x) /dev/mapper/<dmraid_name>x+1
device (hd0) /dev/mapper/<dmraid_name>
root (hd0,x)
setup (hd0)

Thanks very much for your work on this. It is a frequently requested
feature. The main blocker so far has been that it needs someone with the
hardware to work on this.
I don't think we can apply this patch until the other pieces of the puzzle
become available as well, but it is great to have a start.
For others reading the list...
The dmraid-udeb package has been (or soon will be) improved to not require
selinux and will add a dependency on the kernel modules required to
activate dmraid devices.
Cheers,
FJP
