Package: conquest
Severity: normal
I cannot initialize the univese after adding myself to the conquest
group.
#conqoper -I e -E
conqoper: setgid(): failed
Actually, it fails like this without any options as well. I'm sure it
will run as root, but I do not wish to run it as root :)

Is the conquest-server postinst initialization not working, or are you
doing it for another reason?
Does sg conquest -c 'conqoper...' work?
Does setting the conqoper ownership to root:conquest and mode 2750 work?

Well, nothing was running if that is what you are asking. Was it suppose
to start the server?

Yes. (done this first)

No, but it's supposed to run conqoper -Ie (as root).

Okay. This is how I'll probably fix it in the package.

This bug is ancient and conquest has gone through several upstream
releases and bug fixes. Is this still even an issue?

I cannot reproduce this bug with current conquest-server from unstable,
and there was a long time of silence in here, so I would say we should
close it, if noone (Adam?) can reproduce it.

Connecting to host: localhost, port 1701
connect localhost:1701: Connection refused
adamm@mira:~$ conqoper -I e -E
Poor cretins such as yourself lack the skills necessary to use this program.
adamm@mira:~$ groups
adamm adm tty lp dialout fax cdrom audio dip src video kvm
adamm@mira:~$ sudo adduser adamm conquest
Adding user `adamm' to group `conquest' ...
Adding user adamm to group conquest
Done.
adamm@mira:~$ conqoper -I e -E
conqoper: setgid(): failed
So I'm still getting the same issue. The initial message when I was not
part of the conquest group is also very uninformative. Shouldn't it say
that one needs to be in conquest group for the program to work?
Also, does this program need root to run?? Seems a little extreme for
just a game.

You're missing a "newgrp conquest" or a fresh login here.

No, it runs here well as a user, but look here:
19:05 zhenech@chiisai ~ % id
uid=1000(zhenech) gid=1000(zhenech) groups=20(dialout),24(cdrom),29
(audio),30(dip),40(src),44(video),46(plugdev),100(users),104(nvram),108
(powerdev),110(scanner),113(fuse),117(conquest),1000(zhenech)
19:05 zhenech@chiisai ~ % conqoper -I e -E
conqoper: setgid(): failed
19:06 zhenech@chiisai ! ~ % newgrp conquest
19:06 zhenech@chiisai ~ % id
uid=1000(zhenech) gid=117(conquest) groups=20(dialout),24(cdrom),29
(audio),30(dip),40(src),44(video),46(plugdev),100(users),104(nvram),108
(powerdev),110(scanner),113(fuse),117(conquest),1000(zhenech)
19:06 zhenech@chiisai ~ % conqoper -I e -E
Initialized everything.
Does that work for you too?

Interesting. I did a new shell login (on the console) and I received the
same error. But now it works after the newgrp. Hmmm.
I guess you can close the bug report if you like.

No I cant :(
Because on a new shell you will get the setgid error again, until you
use newgrp - that is strange, and I cannot understand this behavior,
thats why I tagged it unreproducible yesterday - I only did newgrp for
testing :/
Anyone wants to look at the code and say me why conqoper behaves like
this?
