Please support dm-crypt devices. Given that initrd-tools handles this fine,
yaird should really support it if it wants to be a replacement...

| yaird error: encrypted device 'root' has keyfile specified in /etc/crypttab:3. This is not supported. (fatal)
| Failed to create initrd image.

This happens only for root on a crypted device with a keyfile other than 'none'.

If I read initrd-tools correctly, it will run /keyscripts/*
(not sure where it gets them, not sure where its documented)
but it will ignore the keyfile field in /etc/crypttab.

When booting with initrd-tools, do you have to enter a passphrase to unlock the
root disk?

If so, there's probably a typo in /etc/crypttab that was not detected by initrd-tools,
and we can close this report.

Otherwise, could you describe how you feed the key to cryptsetup?

We'll then need to find a way to do that in yaird, preferably one that
works in mkinitramfs as well.

Regards,
Erik

You can put scripts in /etc/mkinitrd/scripts and they will be executed
(this is also documented in the man page). I have a file
/etc/mkinitrd/scripts/root-key-from-boot which I use. It prompts me
for a password with which it unlocks the keys, but you could also read
it from a USB stick...

I've attached my script as an example. http://bugs.debian.org/247054
contains more information.
