We don't build biarch for PowerPC?

well, yes, but the patch is in the archive as well.

Hrm... Interesting.
I see that the new glibc is still only in incoming. I've pulled it from
there but I'm running into trouble getting it to build applications:
| gcc -m64 -c -o hello.o hello.c
| gcc -m64 -o hello hello.o
| /usr/bin/ld: warning: ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, needed by /lib64/libc.so.6, not found (try using -rpath or -rpath-link)
| /lib64/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_rtld_global@GLIBC_PRIVATE'
| /lib64/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `__libc_enable_secure@GLIBC_PRIVATE'
| /lib64/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_rtld_global_ro@GLIBC_PRIVATE'
| /lib64/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_out_of_memory@GLIBC_PRIVATE'
| /lib64/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_r_debug@GLIBC_2.2.5'
| /lib64/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `__tls_get_addr@GLIBC_2.3'
| /lib64/libc.so.6: undefined reference to `_dl_argv@GLIBC_PRIVATE'
| collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
Is there something I need beyond libc6-dev-amd64 and the packages it
depends on (including lib64gcc1)? I have gcc 4.0.2-1 installed.

it builds on am64 in a i386 chroot, but I see this failure as well,
when building on a i386 host.

This is a binutils bug. I discussed it with James Troup last night,
and we'll get a binutils upload to fix it in the near future; in the
mean time, just install amd64-libs 1.3, or add /lib64 and /usr/lib64 to
/etc/ld.so.conf.
The problem is that ld used to find the 64-bit libraries by searching
/etc/ld.so.conf; which was fine for amd64-libs which added /lib64 to
ld.so.conf so that ldconfig would find them; but now the new ldconfig
knows to search there automatically, so the directory is not added to
ld.so.conf; but ld's search path does not include /lib64 (yet).
Ryan, this doesn't answer why the i386 buildd picked it up, but does
answer why it failed.

thanks, validated that a b-d amd64-libs [i386] works around it.

Thanks - I'm just integrating the changes now. One thing that I noticed
in the Ubuntu packaging is a change to specify -march=x86-64 and
-mtune=x86-64 when building the amd64 cross packages - is this something
that applies in general when building 64 bit packages? I would have
expected that GCC would have defaulted to these settings.

it does default to it. no, that's a glitch, and is not needed for Debian.

Closes: 325560 334013
Changes:
zlib (1:1.2.3-6) unstable; urgency=low
.
* Most of the changes in this version are based heavily on work done for
Ubuntu by Matthias Klose <doko@cs.tu-berlin.de>. Thanks!
* Build biarch packages on PowerPC (closes: #325560).
* Build biarch packages on i386, replacing amd64-libs prior to 1.4 which
included its own copy and adding a theoretically spurious build dep
on amd64-libs to work around binutils troubles (closes: #334013).
* Drop build dep on GCC 3.4 on amd64 - we already stopped using it.
* Update all the lib64 development dependencies to use lib64c-dev rather
than the specific libc-${ARCH}-dev package.
* Don't test lib64 builds - there's a good chance they'll fail due to the
system not being able to execute 64 bit code. Similarly, don't worry if
dh_shlibdeps fails and hard code an unversioned dependency on the
appropriate libc.
