Subject: Split xbase-clients

Package: xbase-clients
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-8
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

xbase-clients by now has an installed size of 4,5MB. Quite
a lot for a "base" package. One, that nearly every X
workstation has installed.

It has a lot of specific add-ons, that not everyone needs.

I've tried to create some categories of tools in
xbase-clients:

- diagnostics / debugging:
xev, xfd, xrandr, xtrap*, xlsatoms, dpsexec, dpsinfo,
	xprop, xdpyinfo, xwininfo, glxinfo, xvinfo,
	appres, editres, listres, viewres,
	Xmark, x11perf, and x11perfcomp
- management tools:
	xvidtune, atobm, bmtoa, fstobdf,
- desktop utilities:
	(see Bug#199675)
beforelight, oclock, xclock, xmag, xload, xeyes,
	xconsole, xbiff,
- demos
xgc, dga, ico, glxgears, texteroids, xlogo,
- basic tools:
xset, xsetroot, xrefresh, xkill, xauth, startx,
	xinit.
	(for xauth see Bug#151613)
- discouraged tools
	both xorg*config tools

The intention of this list is to serve as a starting point.
There are surely hundreds of things, that need to be
changed in it, and it misses some tools from xbase-clients,
that I do not use nor do I have an idea, what they _really_
could do.

I think xrandr rather belongs in the 'management tools' or possibly even
'basic tools' category.

Subject: vote for splitting
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2006 00:17:48 +0200
Hi,

Here's another vote for the splitup of xbase-clients. Not least because,
on a clean system, this happens:

% apt-get install xbase-clients
[...]
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  defoma file fontconfig-config libdb4.4 libdrm2 libexpat1 libfontconfig1
  libfs6 libgl1-mesa-glx libice6 libmagic1 libpng12-0 libsm6 libxaw7
  libxcursor1 libxfixes3 libxft2 libxkbfile1 libxmu6 libxmuu1 libxpm4
  libxrandr2 libxrender1 libxss1 libxt6 libxtrap6 libxtst6 libxv1 libxxf86dga1
  libxxf86vm1 perl perl-modules ttf-dejavu ucf xbase-clients
[...]
0 upgraded, 35 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 14,0MB of archives.
After unpacking 49,2MB of additional disk space will be used.

That's just horrible. The meaning of "base" in xbase-clients has been lost a
long time ago, I guess.

The split as outlined by Elrond in the submission of bug #332521 looks much
better than this. The split off of mesa-utils helped, but not sufficiently,
I guess.

I noticed that it's just xclock that pulls in all the font* stuff.
