Is any of the environment variables shown by locale above set when you
run it? Use the command "env" to see them. What does
your /etc/environment look like? Do any of your shell setup scripts (for
bash, /etc/bashrc, /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc, ~/.bash_profile, maybe
others) set any of the environment variables?

I'm also experiencing this with both of the IA32 systems I upgraded to
sid. A locales downgrade didn't appear to work so this must be due to
one or more of the many packages that I upgraded all at once.

I only noticed this after a reboot when the Evolution mail client
started sorting in a case-sensitive manner.

locale now returns:
$ locale
LANG=
LC_CTYPE="POSIX"
LC_NUMERIC="POSIX"
LC_TIME="POSIX"
LC_COLLATE="POSIX"
LC_MONETARY="POSIX"
LC_MESSAGES="POSIX"
LC_PAPER="POSIX"
LC_NAME="POSIX"
LC_ADDRESS="POSIX"
LC_TELEPHONE="POSIX"
LC_MEASUREMENT="POSIX"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="POSIX"
LC_ALL=

$ cat /etc/environment

LANG=en_NZ.UTF-8

A grep for LC and LANG from the return of /usr/bin/env returns nothing
set. Likewise for /etc/profile, ~/.bashrc and ~/.bash_profile.

Regards,
Adam

Hello,

I still have a problem with setting locales after todays upgrade of pam
to ver 0.79-2.
After dpkg-reconfigure locales and choosing  pl_PL ISO-8859-2 I've got:
Generating locales (this might take a while)...

Before dpkg-reconfigure locales I've got:
cat /etc/locale.gen
pl_PL ISO-8859-2
After it's changing to
cat /etc/locale.gen
#pl_PL ISO-8859-2

When I change it back to pl_PL ISO-8859-2 and run locale-gen everything
works ok.
