Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I'd like to have a debian-planet list that would receive blog postings
from planet.debian.org.

The main reason is that after postings expire on the planet website,
it's very hard to find old postings if you cannot remember who wrote
it. Think of "there was some nice sh script snippet" or "someone
pointed to that great package". Now you have to manually browse all
feeds or hope for google. Having a regular list archive on
lists.debian.org would solve this.

Joey has already set up a list for that privately, but it is not
archived publically. Providing that service from lists.debian.org
would recognize the importance of planet.debian.org to Debian culture.

I'm Cc'ing this to debian-devel so that people can comment if they'd
rather like their blog not to get archived elsewhere. (IMHO this
shouldn't be a problem since they want the content on
planet.debian.org, but maybe others think differently.)

I am in favour of the idea. rss2email is a useful tool for this.

Please don't introduce any more namespace confusion.

Agreed. What about debian-planet-feed?

While I agree that an archive of Planet Debian is desirable, I'm not
sure this is the way to go. It seems to me that an archival feature to
PlanetPlanet would be more worthwhile - that would preserve the Planet
look and all the images that a typical RSS to email script doesn't.

Besides, this list is badly named. Debian Planet and Planet Debian are
two entirely different things.

I second this proposal too, but I really think, IMHO, it should have a
name like planet-debian-something (perhaps lists' policy violation?)
just to, as Rob states, avoid confusions. Or even some name like
debian-blogs or the like would work too.

I'm not sure an archived Planet is such a great idea; blogs tend to
be self-archiving anyway, so a Debian hosted archive seems like it
wouldn't add all that much, and would also remove the possibility of
updating old posts to provide corrections or links to newer information
-- heck, I update many of my posts within a few hours of posting them,
either because of obvious errors or feedback; the mailing list model
would pointlessly preserve the first draft. I'm not at all sure I'd be
happy having my blog republished like that.

Cheers,
aj

Hi Chris,
I'd second that. I was just trying to find a post on planet about
adjusting your screen size and dpi and couldn't rememeber who said it.
the post refered to xdpyinfo and 'displaysize' option in X config and a
kde controlpanel for dpi. If I had a list to search, that be cool.

[I'm sure someone else has already expressed this but I can't find the
post on this thread, at least]

What would really be useful, for more than just debian, would be for the
aggregator software to be extended to archive posts which it rotates off
the front page.

I'm happy this _doesn't_ exist ATM -- I expire all my blog entries after a
month.

See Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho's message in the bug log.

> What would really be useful, for more than just debian, would be for the

I'm with Tollef Fog Heen[1] (who didn't mail the bug) and Anthony Towns
in being hesitant about web log archiving. While archiving certainly can
be useful (I use rss2email and Evolution's search feature), I don't
think it's the job of debian.org to do it.

I rather think it would be better for someone to make a hack to do
google searches (or use some other suitable search engine) to direct
queries only on the sites that carry the web logs on Planet Debian. A
search form that adds lots of site: -keywords into the query or
something. This lets web log writers to still control their messages (to
fix mistakes, or even take down unintentionally flammable entries), for
example.

Perhaps it should be an opt-in or opt-out feature, than.

Straying OT, but, if you publish something on the web, you should be
prepared never to see the back of it, no matter what desire you express
on the site.

Is this private list available for other people to subscribe to? At
the very least, can we document this?

It sounds like a number of people would be happier with with this both
as an unofficial service and a non-public archived list. If Joey is
not happy with running this, I'm happy to set up the rss2email program
on a list at my own site.

Of course, it's not clear to me if there is a name suggestion other
than "debian-planet" that would make an official list possible. I
still tend to think this would be the best situation.

Regards,
Mako
