Subject: mouse.o: EmulateWheelTimeout seems to be missing
Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 11:42:17 +0200
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-4
Severity: normal

 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=323 describes a patch to
use EmulateWheel and the 3rd button of the mouse concurrently. Although
it was added to the xorg-respository in autumn 2004 it seems to be
still missing in debian xorg version. At least it doesn't work for me
and a quick search in the debian-xorg trunk showed that it isn't there.

So please add one of the patches or update to the latest xorg
 respository version.

I would also like to ask that the EmulateWheelTimeout option be added.
For a thinkpad trackpoint, it is the only convenient way to use the
middle button for cut-and-paste.

I meant that I would just like the option to exist in Debian's xorg.
Currently when I try to enable it, it doesn't work. Adding it to
debconf would be a bonus.

thanks,
-Chris

i'm thirding this request. EnableWheelTimeout would be very useful
for me.

Alternatively, i'd be satisfied if debian would use the
EmulateWheelClickToo [0] patch, which has arguably better semantics
for those of us with TrackPoint devices (but may work worse for people
with regular mice).

it's unclear to me why neither patch has made it into the debian X.org
sources, since at least EnableWheelTimeout has been committed to the
main line for 11 months [1].

[dkg@squeak xorg]$ grep -ir EmulateWheelTimeout xorg-x11-6.8.2.dfsg.1/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/mouse
[dkg@squeak xorg]$ grep -ir EmulateWheelClickToo xorg-x11-6.8.2.dfsg.1/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/mouse
[dkg@squeak xorg]$ zgrep -i enablewheel /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg/*
[dkg@squeak xorg]$

If both patchsets are Considered Harmful for some reason, at least
some documentation of the decision should appear in the documentation.

Thanks for maintaining the debian xorg packages! it's very exciting
to have this work in etch.

Regards,

	--dkg

These patches aren't considered harmful, but I've feature-frozen the 6.8
packages at this time. Thus, only fixes that affect Debian packaging issues
like upgrades, or more serious bugs, will go in. The patch you want is in
the 6.9rc0 packages that are currently in experimental, so it is
forthcoming and available to you if you really need it.

The main reason is that I'm currently strapped for manpower on these
packages, and I want to direct as much energy as possible towards getting
the new packages ready so that when they are released by upstream we can
get them to you in a more timely fashion than in the past. I hope the 6.9
packages work out for you, and if not, I hope you can at least wait for
them to hit unstable and/or testing. Thanks!

Subject: [patch] EmulateWheel button press broken
Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 14:23:19 -0800
As reported in two Debian bug reports [1] [2], the ability for the
EmulateWheelButton to generate button events was broken shortly before
the 6.9 release. It is still broken in current Debian unstable package
6.9.0.dfsg.1-3, and I believe it is still broken in x.org CVS.

It was broken by version 1.15 of
xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/input/mouse/mouse.c. The problem is the
removal of the truebuttons variable. The wheel emulation code in
MouseDoPostEvent modifies buttons to mask out EmulateWheelButton,
therefore the if condition

    if (buttons != pMse->lastMappedButtons) {

(line 2256) was failing when the EmulateWheelButton was pressed,
therefore

    pMse->lastMappedButtons = buttons;

(line 2359) was not being run, therefore when the EmulateWheelButton was
released,

    change = buttons ^ pMse->lastMappedButtons;

(line 2162) thought there was no change, therefore the button press was
not generated.

The appended patch fixes this by restoring truebuttons (which I called
origbuttons to be slightly clearer). The logic is very similar to
before 1.15, and it does not appear to interfere with the mapping
changes in 1.15, so I don't think it will introduce any problems that
weren't already there. I tested that I can now generate a button press
with EmulateWheelButton.

The patch was generated against the latest Debian unstable sources, but
applies cleanly to the latest CVS.

Andrew
