Package: w3m-img
Version: 0.5.1-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
w3m-img which (AIUI) is supposed to allow w3m to display images inline,
does not seem to do anything at all. No images are displayed, no matter
what combination of options I try. The documentation is non-existant in
the binary package, so perhaps there is some configuration parameter I
am missing? If so, it should either be more obvious, or enabled by
default.
I am marking this as grave since the package is unusable for the
described purpose.

Works fine for me. What terminal are you using it in? Does it work for you
in an xterm?

Fails for me in konsole (my default choice), xterm, rxvt & eterm. I
couldn't think of any others to try. I just now noticed that it does work
on my framebuffer, so I guess it is something specific to X.
Thanks,
Paul.

Whileas w3m-img works in xterm as intended, it does not display

Tested with:
% w3m -config /dev/null grml.org
No problems with w3m/w3m-img 0.5.1-3, problem appeared with

w3m-img *SHOULD* work in xterm, at least. Things to check:
In the environment in which w3m is running, is
- the XWINDOW (spelling?) environment variable set to the XID of the
xterm window? w3m-img needs this to know which window to paint
over. An XID is basically a memory address. You can probably use
xprop or xwininfo to find out what a given window's XID is.
- the XAUTHORITY environment variable set to the path to your
.Xauthority file, of unset if that file is ~/.Xauthority. GDM, for
example, will put the file in /tmp if $HOME is on a root-squashed
NFS filesystem. w3m needs this to have write access to the X
environment.
- Obviously, DISPLAY also needs to be set, usually to :0.
I think many years ago I accidentally made w3m-img work over the
network (i.e. a remote X window), but I wouldn't be at all surprised
if remote X has additional caveats to make w3m-img work.

For w3m-img to work on the console, check that:
- the "tty" command reports a tty (e.g. /dev/tty1) that is listed in
/etc/securetty.
- you have write access to /dev/fb0 -- probably meaning you need to
be in the "video" group.
Since root can bypass some of these problems, try this to open w3m on
a temporary extra console, running as root:
sudo openvt -sw -- w3m -config /dev/null http://google.com/

Well, 4 years later I can't reproduce my problem with w3m/w3m-img
versions 0.5.2-2+b1 and 0.5.2-2.1. For *my* part of the bugreport it
could be closed.
