Subject: startup conflicts between mdadm and lvm1
Date: Sat, 28 May 2005 09:46:24 +0200
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: lvm
Severity: important

Regarding /etc/rcS.d:
raidtools2 used to start at 24, lvm1 at 25, mdadm now starts at
  25 and lvm2 at 26.

This works fine unless mdadm+lvm1 are being used. The solution is
simple: either lvm1 moves to 26 or mdadm to 24. Since raidtools2 has
been removed, it seems more consistent for lvm to move...

retitle 311057 lvm2 does not properly shift init script to 26
reassign 311057 lvm
thanks

On a fresh install, lvm uses S26 in /etc/rcS.d. If upgraded from
a previous version which used S25 instead (not sure which one, I am
just proxying this bug), it fails to shift the start order properly,
so that lvm will continue to start at S26. This conflicts with
mdadm, which needs run before lvm, but since it also starts at S25
and m is after l in the alphabet, it does not get a chance.

Yes, lvm1 used 25 and a fresh lvm2 install uses 26, but switching from
lvm1 to lvm2 leaves the start script at 25. This causes a severe bug for
those running lvm on raid, since mdadm also starts at 25, but after the
old lvm25 (by alphabetical ordering).

For example, on my system I run three raid one components: md0 (which
becomes /boot), md1 (which becomes /) and md2 which becomes an lvm. But,
because lvm gets ahead of mdadm, the md2 raid device does not get
started properly, only using one of the disks, with the other one
somehow rendered inoperable.

hi all,

the bug is even worth, cause lvm2 uses then only the realdisk (dev/sda3)
instead the raid-disk (/dev/md2).

so if you figure out the problem and move the startup-scripts for lvm
after the first boot

YOUR DATA ARE GONE!!!

cause the system does not recognize the raid-array as inconsistent and
use it as consistent array!

your data are also gone, if you try to startup your old kernel 2.4.x

that's really bad
thomas

Use initramfs-tools for your initramdisk instead of yaird. It assembles
everything before mounting your root filesystem. No worries.

Is this script ordering issue fixed when dependency based boot
sequencing is used?

I did not quite understand the problem, and am unsure which of the
packages involved are still in the Debian archive.

With the packages lvm2 and mdadm installed, the ordering on my test
machine is

  S03mdadm-raid
  S07lvm2

Happy hacking,

Hi Martin.

As Petter mentioned, this should be obsolete now, can we close the bug?

Cheers,
Chris.

Closing the issue, as is probably already fixed and/or an non-issue and
the original author didn't reply to my request about one month ago.

Feel free to reopen in case this is still an issue.

Cheers,
Chris.
