Hi !
We use smbclient to backup Windows systems with backuppc. Everything
worked well on a woody until we upgraded to sarge.
Now backuppc cannot backup anymore some systems and smbclient eats all
available memory causing random processes to be killed, with a simple 'ls'
done as a normal user.
Here's the output of smbclient:

We might need a level 10 debug output in case you have an opportunity
to reproduce this.
I'll try to reproduce it (I bet I won't..:-)).
Could you also check the eaxct version of the samba package? Very
probably 3.0.14a-1....
Please also try using the package from sid : 3.0.14a-2. This could
indeed be #309003 (upstream bug #2622).

Ludovic,
What is the target system ? The bug you report slightly sounds like
#302771, especially if the target is an XP system.
Could you also try to list a directory with less than 32 entries?
If needed please ping either me (bubulle) or Steve (vorlon) on IRC

I managed to reproduce this bug, unfortunately.
And, even more unfortunately, it seems different from #302771 and it
is NOT fixed by 3.0.14a-2...
Attached is a level 10 debug output from a session with the bug. The
behaviour is what Ludovic described. "ls" seems to "hang" and the CPU
and memory impact of smbclient slowly increases (thankfully, the
machine I tested on has lots of resources).

It's a Win 2000. And the bug is different from #302771 since I cannot list a
single entry in the directory.

Creating a directory containing the same list of filenames, I'm not able
reproduce this bug using a WinXP Home server.

Here's the behavior that I'm seeing here with 3.0.14a-1.
I have 12 Windows PCs on my network (8 WinXP Pro SP2, 1 Win2K Pro and 3
Win2K Server) and the only ones showing this behavior are running WinXP
Pro SP2 that has been "upgraded" from Win98 using WinXP's installer.
The first one is crashing when listing a directory of more than 32
entries and the other one at 28 entries.
On others PCs, I can list directories of more than 50 entries with not
problem.
Hope this helps,

Same for mine. I previously reported crashing with 27 entries, but
this is indeed 28 : there was a hidden file in the directory (but this
is NOT related to it).
My "test case" (named "DRIS-GD" in the output files I sent today) is
maybe also a machine which was upgraded from Win98 to WinXP (though
I'm unsure...this may also be a former W2K machine, we don't really
have the history of that machine)

Hi folks,
Ok, with some hints in the right direction and a little bit of guesswork,
I've been able to reproduce this bug. It appears that this bug *only*
manifests on shares that are hosted on VFAT filesystems -- not on NTFS.
Apparently, 2K does not respond the same to search continuation requests on
VFAT as it does on NTFS, and ends up in a loop where it repeatedly sends the
same data. (This is the trigger; it's not a fixed number of files in the
directory, it's the size of the directory data being sent and whether the
server has to split it between multiple PDUs.)
Since so far this is only reproducible on 2K or XP servers using VFAT, which
is a fairly uncommon configuration that will decrease in relevance during
sarge's lifetime, I don't believe this bug should be considered
release-critical for sarge; though I will certainly do what I can to help
the Samba Team get the bug fixed.
Thanks,

Yes, I think it's not a release critical bug (so I submitted it with
sev. important) because of the uncommon of the setup.
But the reality is that this is a very annoying bug, I mean that when
you are browsing the network with nautilus, and you found a FAT machine,
the system goes to OOM.
I think releasing Sarge with this bug can make network browsing unusable
to a sizeable group of people.
To illustrate this:
Network | Number of Shares | Problematic Shares
Student residence | 23 | 2
University | aprox 50 | 1 (that I've found).
So while maybe not a RC bug, as is difficult to found a FAT machine, any
Debian user in our student residence will get gnome-vfs-daemon eating
all of their memory, bandwidth and cpu suddenly, as soon as he/she tries
to list with nautilus the directory contents of any machine, with a
probability of 1/10. The only option given to this user is to logoff, or
go to the command line and kill gnome-vfs-daemon, losing all the
connections and file transfers he had. No fun for him.
Regards and thanks,
Emilio

Hello!
This is about bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=309798
This bug is now closed in latest version of smbclient package
(3.0.14a-3). However, it still occurs on my machine.
I've encounter the same bug earlier and reported it to samba:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2698
There is some number of hosts in our network that triggers this bug.
Some of them started to work after upgrading to 3.0.14a-3. However, for
some of them it is still non-working. Here is an example:

Please, reopen this bug.
I really need this working because I'm implementing a network indexing
application. I would be glad to provide any additional info about my
case. I can also recompile all package with debug info. And if nothing
helps, I can provide a shell on my machine.
With best regards,
Alexander.

From your comments in this upstream bug entry, this is not the same bug as
309798 since it appears to manifest on NTFS shares. Could you open a new
bug against the smbclient package for tracking this?
Do you have problems with this same directory running smbclient 3.0.12,
3.0.13, 3.0.14a-2?
Can you give us a tarball of the directory in question, or at least a full
file listing (from smbclient if possible, or from NT)?
Thanks,
