Subject: gdm logins fail to start sessions
Date: Wed, 11 May 2005 08:48:20 -0500
Package: gdm
Version: 2.6.0.8-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After a recent upgrade of gdm, logins "fail". A user inputs
username/password/securID login, it succeeds, goes to a black screen,
then back to login. Here is the output to daemon.log:

gdm[23126]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

Putting gdm into debug mode seems to be a workaround, but then clutters
the logs with useless junk.

This is happening all workstations at my office, so it dosnt seem to
be a single incident.

And what is in the user's ~/.xsession-errors ? I have a feeling your
problem is in the session startup, and nothing to do with gdm.

The file is blank. Note that the sesision type did not change, and this
behavior happens regargless of the session selected, or which user.
This is happening on close to 150 workstations here. As near as I can
tell, the session is never starting at all (startkde for most)

You don't happen to have a full disk or ran out of quota, right? I do
have experiences with failed logins when stuff can't write to disk (temp
files, log files, ...)

Disks have plenty of space (~80G free) and every user is affected, even
those without quotas.

Hi,

I did not found any hints on this in the bug report, so maybe it's worth asking:

You see any unexpected messages in dmesg or any system logs? Are there any
errors in /var/log/XFree86.0.log?

Thanks,

No, nothing of the sort. However, I am starting to lean towrads
libnss-ldap being the issue. Bug #302296
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=302296) does not
describe the error exactly, but much of the behavior is the same. Im
testing today on this..

Ahh, you didn't mention this! There is/was an ABI conflict between the two,
which would cause this. I can't find the bug atm, but this will be the problem.
Either two libdbs, two libgnutls's, or something of that nature which then
causes the gdm process to segfault. Last time I followed up on it, the
maintainer of the conflicting package didn't want to change ABI before sarge,
so this combination just won't work.

Heh.. its hard to mention all the relevant parts, we have such a
complex setup here you sometimes just have to assume certain pices are
working. It appears that this nss-ldap issues is breaking a pam module
(not used by GDM) as well, which is what brought my attention to this.
If you find the bug number, I would be interested in reading up on it.

We are, thankfully, down to one gnutls, one gcrypt, and one sasl in sarge;
and AFAIK libdbs have been fixed long ago not to conflict.

There is still one outstanding issue in sarge with the fact that libldap2
currently provides both libldap.so.2 and libldap_r.so.2 with identical
exported symbols, differing only in the claim that one is thread-safe. This
is fixed in libldap2 2.1.30-7 in unstable by making one a symlink to the
other, but bug #309485 is keeping this out of testing for the moment.

Jay, taking care to run rm -f /usr/lib/libldap.so.2.0.15 before doing so,
would you mind upgrading to the libldap2 from unstable to see if it fixes
your problem?

Cheers,

That did not change anything. libldap.so.2.0.15 did not exist before I
upgraded to libldap2 2.1.30-6, though. Here are relevant package versions:

ldap-utils 2.1.30-3
libldap-2.2-7 2.2.23-1
libldap2 2.1.30-6
libnss-ldap 238-1
libpam-ldap 178-1
gdm 2.6.0.8-1

Did I miss something?

Does this mean you only upgraded to 2.1.30-6? You need 2.1.30-7 from
unstable to check whether it's the bug we fixed.

Are you running nscd on this system? (That package enjoys frequent mention
in the log of bug #302296.) If so, can you please restart it and see if
that makes a difference?

Heh- no, we avoid that like the plague. Being a DoD site we rather not
deal
with software with a track record like that. :-) We have libnss-ldap
going directly to the ldap server.

Ok... :)

How about restarting gdm itself?

For what it's worth, I think the severity of this bug is exaggerated.
GDM is certainly not "unusable or mostly so" for any of the systems
I've touched lately - indeed, this bug doesn't affect them at all.

In fact, this bug seems to be a perfect match for the "important"
severity: «a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a
package, without rendering it completely unusable to everyone.»

But then again, I'm no release manager..

FWIW, although this bug has been downgraded because it's unlikely to be an
RC bug in GDM, it's also very possible that this report represents an RC bug
in some other package involved.

AFAIK, no one has yet tried to reproduce the submitter's configuration to
verify whether libnss_ldap/libpam_ldap currently work for GDM.

This is a followup for Debian bug <http://bugs.debian.org/308825>.

Could you please try to run "getent passwd"? Are all users displayed?

 Do you use NFS?

No, but we do use OpenAFS (packages from debian)

About bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=308825

Someone asked you what was in /var/log/gdm/:0.log ...
i feel awkward it did not ask for the other file
inthis directory :
Xauth.0 . If when gdm is down this file exists, delete
it and restart gdm. It fixed it for me in alll those
"gdm reboot though login seems to work issues".

It looks like a "bonobo" issue : i mean some gnome
applications (my bet is evolution-data-server) are
unable to close properly at session closup .

Could you test before removing Xauth.0 in a console
that you have something like:
$ps ax
...
gdm ...
gdm ...
Xfree86 [Z] ..

NB: before restarting gdm , try to kill those . If you
don't know "kill" very well i suggest installing pkill
and as root:
#pkill -KILL -f gdm
#pkill -KILL -f X

Greetings
Alban

Hello,

I'm experiencing similar gdm login problems in combination with
libnss-ldap. Some playing around with strace/gdb revealed the following:

1. gdm starts
2. libnss-ldap opens a (tls/ssl) connection to the LDAP server. This
connection is not closed after use. It is kept open for future LDAP lookups.
3. gdm closes all open filedescriptor (using function
gdm_close_all_descriptors defined in daemon/misc.c). This also closes
the socket used for communicating with the LDAP server.
4. gdm opens a new connection to the X server. The filedescriptor of
this connection is the same as the filedescriptor that was used for the
LDAP server connection.
5. user enters username/password.
6. libnss-ldap attempt to contact the LDAP server again, unfortunately,
the data gets send to the X-server instead. libnss-ldap does not know
its socket was closed by gdm.
7. login fails.
8. gdm restarts.

Perhaps it is possible to tell libnss-ldap not to keep its socket open,
but IMHO, the real problems is gdm. I 'fixed' the problems by commenting
out the entire implementation of gdm_close_all_descriptors. It seems to
work, though I haven't checked for side-effects/security implications...

Groetjes,
  Rob

For what it is worth, I think libnss_ldap and gdm works for me. I don't
know if I am lucky or if the bug is fixed in upstream release 2.8.0.6?
The last mail to this bug report is posted after that version entered
unstable, but maybe the debugging was made against the version in
testing? Could that please be clarified?

It could of course be something in my configuration that makes it work
for me while not working for others. (I for example don't use ldaps)

No. The problem is not fixed in 2.8.0.6. I still need a patched gdm to
be able to log in.

My analysis was against a 2.6 version of gdm from unstable. However,
2.8.0.6 (also from unstable) still contains the same code and same bug
as 2.6.

> It could of course be something in my configuration that makes it work

With TLS disabled, I still can't login with gdm. However, the following
messages seem to be gone when TLS is disabled:

Jan 1 09:52:01 ensor isdnlog: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server...
Jan 1 09:52:01 ensor isdnlog: nss_ldap: reconnected to LDAP server
after 1 attempt(s)

As far as I remember, this problem surfaced months after the last update
of libnss-ldap or openldap, so perhaps something else is causing the
problem. Furthermore, I also have a computer that doesn't have this
problem. The only difference between the two computers is that the
'broken' one runs nscd. Well, at least for a very short time:

robc:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/nscd start
Starting Name Service Cache Daemon: nscd.
robc:~$ ps auxw | grep nscd

Hello,

I managed to solve the problem without patching gdm.

It seems nscd is crashing. See debian bug report:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=336310

After removing the nscd cache (/var/db/nscd), nscd no longer crashes and
gdm lets me login again!

Groetjes,
  Rob

Ok. I keep nscd disabled because I find it buggy, and I'm glad you
traced your problem removing it.

However, an earlier message in this bug report mentioned affection of a
system without nscd installed. It looks like there are at least two
separate bugs here.

hi there--

i've run into this problem (or something very similar) with the
version of gdm in ubuntu 5.10 (gdm 2.8.0.5-0ubuntu1). my
/etc/nsswitch.conf uses "ldap compat", and i've removed nscd entirely.
i'm not using LDAP for PAM at all (preferring krb5 authentication).

Thanks to the suggestions by Rob Caelers in this bug, i looked into
problems with gdm_close_all_descriptors(), and reported my findings
upstream to what looks like the relevant gdm GNOME bug [0]. With
Brian Cameron's help, i found and removed a single offending call to
gdm_close_all_descriptors() in daemon/display.c, and now gdm
successfully works for logging in.

the patch i used against the ubuntu version was this:

i hope this helps other people to resolve this bug. let me know if i
can be of further assistance with it.
