Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: grave
Justification: the package is useless
Please remove cyrus-sasl and all its binary packages from sid.
After NMUing it a lot of times, and giving both the public (via email to
d-devel and d-user) and the almost-MIA maintainer more than 3 months to
speak up against its removal, I am living up to the title of
maintainer-in-charge-because-nobody-else-is-doing-anything-about-it, and
requesting that the final blow be dealt to it.

Release team note: this package is being removed from testing due to RC bug
#212307.

As the person doing MIA, I note that the maintainer isn't even in the
MIA database. So apparantly nobody inquired about this before on QA or
to mia@qa.debian.org (well, actually someone did in 2003, but then he
replied at least).
Dima, please comment on this removal request; do you agree to have this
package removed?

Because dima isn't MIA per se, he is mostly MIA. From experience, Dima
doesn't have time to deal with SASL unless something very weird happens, but
he DOES show up from time to time.

Dima, please reply soon. I did ask you a lot of time ago, and got no reply.
Nobody from d-d or d-u@lists.d.o spoke up against removing old sasl, either.
I am willing to help with new sasl, but we really, really have no good
reasons I can see for keeping old SASL in Debian, and I am *not* willing to
help to keep it secure. Heck, not even qmail uses old sasl anymore, so we
don't even have that aggravating reason to keep it around anymore...
Upstream has deprecated this old version of SASL more than 3 years ago. It
is about time we let it rest in peace.

You are right, I don't have time now to maintain the SASL package
properly. I'm going to offer it for adoption soon (unless you want to
take over). As for this bug, I agree, cyrus-sasl should be removed.
Regards,
Dima.

Ok. I suggest that the SASL packages should be maintained by a team in
Alioth (I don't mind being part of the team), but I don't think I have all
the time maintaining SASL properly requires, otherwise I would have asked
to officially adopt it already...

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive (ftp-master.debian.org) and will not propagate to any
mirrors (ftp.debian.org included) until the next cron.daily run at the
earliest.
Packages are never removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems.
Bugs which have been reported against this package are not automatically
removed from the Bug Tracking System. Please check all open bugs and
close them or re-assign them to another package if the removed package
was superseded by another one.
Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 305119@bugs.debian.org.
This message was generated automatically; if you believe that there is
