Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 4.16-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system
Until now, I could reproduce this bug on kernel 2.6.8 and 2.6.11. It
seems independant from the desktop/window manager (tried under Gnome,
XFce)
Step 1: Start xscreensaver-demo
Step 2: choose Hyperball, click on preview
After a while, the system crashes (not only X). It always happens, in
demo mode or real mode. I can provide more information if necessary.
Thanks for your help,
Dimitri

Define "crashes"; could you check if the machine is network-accessible?

Thanks for your quick answers,
Ok, It was a mistake, this is not a system crash, the machine is still
accessible through network: Can ping, can access Zope.
So it seems that only local input devices do not work anymore..
Graphic card is a Radeon 9200 SE (128 Mb)

OK, so the X Server crashes (probably). Can you use "ps" to see if X
is still running when that occurs? Anything in /var/log/XFree.log.0?

A top shows that XFree86 is running with full CPU load. Tried as root
(using ssh) to kill the process (first 15, then 9) but it did not work.
A shutdown -h now had no effect.. joining the XFree86 log as attachment.

About 2 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding a
lockup of the X server on a Radeon board when running the hyperball

I'm afraid this is still an issue, see the upstream report referenced
above. Dimitri, can you try the workarounds described in comments #12
and #13 there?

I have tried what Michel suggested : (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5986)
- comment #13: commenting the load "dri" line in xorg.conf seems to solve the problem; the screensaver ran without crashing for about 25 minutes. Usually, when it crashes, it occurs within the first five minutes
- the other advice (comment #12) does not apply for me, since the options do not appear in my configuration file ( "XaaNoSolidBresenhamLine" and "XaaNoSolidTwoPointLine" )
I hope this helps, don't hesitate to ask me for other informations,

Yes, you have to add them... see the xorg.conf manpage.

Hi Michel,
adding the options in combination with DRI loaded works. There is no crash anymore. The animation is just slower, but I guess it is a consequence of turning off things (with the options).
Cheers,
Dimitri
