a very little thing:
if no "-h <hostname>" option is specified the program uses the local unix socket
to talk to the server. if "-h 127.0.0.1" is given it talks to the server using the
network. but if "-h localhost" is given it talks to the server using the socket instead
of the network. on a local machine this is no problem, but this confuses the user for
example if he is using a ssh tunnel to connect to a mysql server.
i don't know if mysql-client has the same behaviour.

Yes, I know. It's IIRC even documented this way and MySQL refuses to change
this behaviour. There's another "wontfix" bug report regarding this
issue.
