Please set the mkinitrd.conf MODULES value to dep, at least on powerpc. ON
powerpc, we have at least three subarches (pegasos 1, prep and some oldworlds)
which have troubles with either bigger initrd images (bigger than 1.5MB
compressed on pegasos 1), or bigger kernel+initrd images (bigger than 4MB for
both on prep and/or some oldworlds). A initrd created with MODULES=most on a
prep box seems to yield a 5MB (compressed) initrd, while setting it to
MODULES=dep results in a 1.5MB (compressed) initrd, which should be mostly ok
on all those subarches. The bug is marked severity important, but i feel that
it should probably be limit on RC-severity, since it results in a unbootable
machine post d-i install.
Would be nice if all those useless ide drivers and filesystems could be
removed from the initrd, in favor of keeping only the filesystem and disk
driver modules on which root resides.

I tried to install Sarge on a ppc and... it failed! Because at least
some modules have been missing. Following semi-official hints, I figured
out that MODULES=dep needs to be set to make it work. This has been
confirmed by Sven (see below).
Read: currently, it is a pain in the ass setting up boot configuration
on prep. You need to change the config, cook initrd image, cook vmlinuz
image, then install it manually. At least the first three steps should
and can be automated.
Regards,
Eduard.
<Zomb> svenl: should I set it to grave?
<svenl> horms: the only problem with my existing code is that i use absolut symlinks and not relative ones.
<Zomb> or is it pointless?
<svenl> Zomb: i would, but i guess jbailey will not fix it, not sure though.

<Zomb> ok
<svenl> Zomb: you can tell jbailey that i told that.
<svenl> It affects prep and pegasos1, and probably some oldworlds too.
<svenl> maybe some earlier chrp even.

Yes, indeed, setting MODULES=dep by default on powerpc should be safe, the
only reason to keep most is for x86, where we are fearing that the mkinitrd
detection code is broken for some cases and play safe.
This is not the case for powerpc, where we have rather good knowledge of what
hardware is available, and the initrd size constraint on some arches
overbalance the eventual lone case of this not being true, and it is
preferable to know about such case and fix them anyway.
Jeff, please fix this in a proposed-for-sarge initrd-tools upload, or at least
in the unstable version.
Friendly,
Sven Luther

Thanks Colin, ...
BTW, on a unrelated topic, have you also noticed some occasional
freeze-on-wake with the current ubuntu kernel on your powerbook ?

- Don't be so hasty to use lvm10: only use it if lvmiopversion
says we're lvm10-only, *or* there's no dm-mod for the kernel;
this avoids breaking lvm2 volumes in 2.4 when the lvm10 package
is installed. Closes: #291386.

The package mkinitrd-tools is Architecture: all, thus checking architecture in
debian/rules is not going to work.

What a mess.
Looks to me like the only real options for dealing with with bug for
sarge are:
- revert the powerpc change in debian/rules, downgrade bug as not RC
or
- re-upload initrd tools as an arch any package

Here is an idea:
(1) Revert the problem debian/rules change.
(2) Modify mkinitrd to set the default MODULES to dep or most based on
output of "dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_ARCH"
(3) Comment out the MODLES= line in the config file and leavi it as an
example.
This is an UNTESTED patch to describe the fix better than the above
narative!

You can use
dpkg --print-installation-architecture
which _does not_ require dpkg-dev.
