Hi,

It'd be useful to have a reduced pciutils-udeb for use in the installer,
so that we can ask users to run lspci, and to provide a mapping from PCI
IDs to names in images where hotplug is being used instead of discover
(such as the Ubuntu development branch). I wrote this patch:

  http://people.ubuntulinux.org/patches/pciutils.udeb.diff

(There's also a subsequent version in Ubuntu which bumps the priority of
pciutils-udeb to standard, but I think we'd prefer to avoid that in
Debian until after sarge to avoid possible unwanted consequences for the
installer's low-memory mode.)

Thanks,

I've now committed at least some hotplug support to d-i. Could you
please apply this patch soon, so that it can work properly? Since sarge
is now frozen, you can upload it without fear of breaking sarge.

Thanks,

Subject: pciutils: NMU to create a udeb package for D-I purposes
Date: Sat, 3 Dec 2005 12:09:07 +0100
In #284110, Colin Watson proposes a patch used in Ubuntu to allow
creating a udeb package for pciutils.

As the D-I team often needs more info about some specific hardward, it
would be nice to have a udeb in order to allow using lspci as early as
possible during installs, especially when some hardware is
unsupported.

So, I have uploaded a NMU in DELAYED/7-day (which allows some
maintainer's reaction), using Colin's patch with two changes:

1) The changelog entry

2) debian/control

I removed the dependency on wget which was removed in the former NMU
and not integrated in Colin's patch.

I also plan another NMU as soon as this one as reached testing, with a
few more changes such as resyncing with upstream which should fix a
few pending bugs.

Some cleaning in the packaging seems needed as well.

Now that we've switched to udev in trunk it's more than nice; it's
necessary to be able to display network device names in netcfg (since we
no longer get them from discover).

So, another motivation to resync with upstream pciutils.

Cleaning the build system would also be nice (help would be
appreciated, I'm not very familiar with packages providing libs...and
lintian/linda give a lot of warnings on pciutils especially for the library).
