Here's a patch that updates python-parted to the new libparted API
(written on work time for Canonical):
http://people.ubuntulinux.org/patches/python-parted.new-libparted.diff
I'd like to include this in Ubuntu rather soon, since our python-parted
package is currently uninstallable. Could you at least let me know
fairly quickly whether you approve of the API changes I've made to
python-parted? Ideally they could be uploaded to Debian experimental
relatively soon.
Thanks,

Thanks for the update, the patch, and the ping.
Python-parted has not been actively worked on within Progeny for quite
some time -- I think this is mainly due to our Debian "port" of Anaconda
using Red Hat's version of Python-parted instead.
Nevertheless, I'm having a look at your patch right now.
Thanks again!

Should Debian replace the Progeny python-parted with the Red Hat one, then?

I've heard Jeff Licquia gripe a lot about Red Hat's, so I'm not sure
that's the best choice. He's the person to ask, though, so I'm CCing
him.

It's my understanding that the parted maintainer blessed the Red Hat
bindings, and that most people doing Python things with parted are using
the Red Hat API.
Thus, I would recommend that we use Red Hat's bindings in the interest
of compatibility.
If you're interested, I have already packaged the Red Hat bindings for
my Anaconda for Debian work. They should be available at any
Componentized Linux mirror as "python-parted-rh". I was planning to
upload them at some point once I had thought about a migration strategy
for the very few projects using our bindings, but if you have a deeper
abiding interest in them beyond mine (which is, basically, "keep
Anaconda working"), then feel free to take it over.
Alternatively, I can upload them if they're something you need, but
don't feel inclined to maintain long-term.

Do you mean me or Matt when you say "you"?
I don't personally use python-parted for anything now that PGI is dead,
and Eric was really the one who understood that part of PGI anyway.

Sorry. I meant Matt. But you can have them too, if you want them.
If both you (Branden) and Matt want them, then we've got a problem. :-)

I don't have any pressing need for them; I'm interested in having the
functionality, but I'm more interested in unmaintained software being
removed from the archive.

Because parted has already revved its SONAME to libparted1.6-12 in unstable,
the python-parted package is presently uninstallable there and this is
therefore a grave bug. It does not currently affect testing, but because
the new libparted ABI is needed in sarge to fix other release-critical
installer issues, python-parted will otherwise be dropped from testing (and
pgi with it) if no one takes an interest in this bug.

Is/will this problem really only be sid related (see tagging)?

In that this package did not ship with sarge, and won't be allowed into etch
unless the bug is fixed, yes...

I understand there were a few API changes in libparted 1.7 as well. Have
you looked at wrapping these at all?

Unfortunately, not yet. I think it would be better decide if the current implementation
will be kept in Debian or it will be transitioned to the other.
python-parted has 5 RC bugs and isn't testing so i've other priorities for the moment.
Feedback is still appreciated though.
