Subject: udev: causes /etc/rc0.d/S40umountfs to segfault
Date: Sun, 28 Nov 2004 06:24:19 +0100
Package: udev
Version: 0.046-3
Severity: important

hi again,

since that the udev-mtab script was introduced, I get umount to
segfault in the shutdown process, leaving the filesystems in an
unclean state (hence the severity). e.g., running

    # umount -ttmpfs -a -r

  produces:

umount: none busy - remounted read-only
    Segmentation fault

though this issue probably needs attention in the 'mount' package side
(feel free to clone), I think it's reasonable to expect udev to
properly umount itself upon system shutdown (specially now that it
writes the mount status to /etc/mtab).

is there a rationale for a S38udev link not existing in runlevels 0
and 6? or perhaps turn init.d/udev-mtab into a full init script with
  start and stop...

  thanks,

Reassigned to mount. Whatever the problem is, it should not segfault.

No, why bother? It's a ramfs, I see no reason to waste time unmounting
it. Also don't forget that the devices in it are probably needed by the
other scripts which would be run after the one unmounting it.
Actually, I guess that maybe mount is segfaulting because it unmounts
/dev and then it can't find the other devices it has to unmount.

while I agree that mount is certainly at fault, I feel that until this
issue is resolved udev 0.46 should be kept out of sarge (*if* some
other people confirm the mount bug, of course).

Justification: breaks an unrelated package, may cause data loss.

This (#284016) is presumably the same issue as #283323.

umount should not segfault.

However, we should also see if we can find a workaround in the
initscript.

I can't think of a workaround, but if this will not be fixed in time for
sarge I will just disable the udev-mtab init script in the udev package.

Is there some easy way to have it disabled for the time being?
(Preferably in a layman-friendly words; I'm not quite sure what the
/etc/init.d/udev* scripts do and how to disable them to fix this.)

I'm using Debian on a laptop and thus shutdown the OS a couple of times
every day, so I'd like to avoid the possible filesystem corruption.
