Subject: O: autofs -- A kernel-based automounter for Linux
Date: Fri, 05 Nov 2004 15:41:20 +0100
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I don't use this package anymore, don't have much interest at all in it
anymore and it is quite a lot more work than I'm willing to do.

I intend to orphan the autofs package.

The package description is:
Autofs controls the operation of the automount daemons. The
automount daemons automatically mount filesystems when they
are used and unmount them after a period of inactivity. This
is done based on a set of pre-configured maps.
 .
The kernel automounter implements an almost complete SunOS
style automounter under Linux. Automounter version 4
(autofs4) has to be enabled when compiling the kernel.
Debian packaged kernels have it enabled.

I use the package and could probably take it if nobody else wants it.

autofs needs VERY urgent cares in order to have it working properly
in sarge. Do you need help to adopt it currently? There are a few
patches already available and some reports needs deep investigation.

My main problem right now is time -- I have an exam coming up tomorrow,
another on on Monday and a last on the 16th. I'll see if I can squeeze some
work on the package inbetween the two last ones. (BTW, my only experience
with autofs is as a user, so it might not be all that easy to hunt down the
bugs. :-) )

BTW, is the package formally orphaned, or should I just do NMUs?

I'm collecting a few hints and patches in BTS, as well as contacting
reports for clarifications and information. I could upload
a new version with some fixes in the meantime.
If you agree, I could upload a NMU quite soon to fix a few urgencies.

I'm quite confident to squash the remaining serious bugs in a few days,
but at least one point requires a precise choice from the proper
maintainer, i.e. adding or not debconf support to manage ldap/nis maps
or not. A partial solution is a better documentation for some
obscure aspects of remote maps.

If you are seriously interested in maintainership I could
set the new Maintainer field, else I would use the QA contact.

Eventually we could consider co-maint. I use autofs in NIS environment,
so I could work better on some aspects.

See the bugreport 279872 _you_ changed in ITA :)

Just uploaded a new QA release. I set maintainer to QA team in the
