What happens when you try to put in russian characters?

Subject: Multibyte input

Hi,

It seems hnb doesn't mind taking in multibyte characters. I created one
entry with some russian characters. It was displayed very poorly in
hnb itself, but using less on the .hnb file showed the characters as expected.

I think fixing this is a big job, thanks for the bug, unfortunatly I don't
have a fix.

I belive the issue is bigger than with russian characters, just as
already stated in the bug report it's with multibyte characters.

Not even the output of Øyvind Kolås shows up correctly for me, which it
definitly should. The reason of course is that it's encoded in
ISO-8859-1 instead of UTF-8.

Rewriting a ncurses software for using wide characters might or might
not be a big task. But looking at the package libncursesw5 might be a
good way to start.

I tried the simple just recompiling using the wide libraries instead of
the ordinary, but it just seriously fucked up the user interface even
more.

Also I had a quick look at the documentation, but it seems neither of
the wide library's packages contain anything useful at all in
/usr/share/doc and the ordinary package hides information about wide
character support pretty well too.

This is probably where I give up. Because that last run of hnb made me
corrupt my db and I never made a backup.

A quick look at hnb shows that it doesn't do anything at all with locale.
(If it did, a rebuild with libncursesw would help, but since none of the
related work has been done, libncursesw won't help yet).
