retitle 276212 RM: supercollider [alpha ia64 amd64] -- broken on 64-bit
thanks

Hi,

The title of bug 276212 is "RM: supercollider [alpha sparc amd64]" -- if
supercollider is broken on 64-bit, I think you meant to include ia64
instead of sparc. I'm fixing it for you with this email.

It looks like the entry in Packages-arch-specific has this right (it
says "%supercollider: !alpha !ia64 !amd64")

regards,

Hi Kevin,
ia64 surely is a 64 bits arch, as well as sparc is.

Hi again,

mmh, not quite sure anymore. from http://www.debian.org/ports/sparc/ :

"The Debian SPARC port, as mentioned above, does support the sun4u
(“Ultra”) architecture. It uses a 64-bit kernel (compiled with a special
version of the egcs compiler, called “egcs64”), but most of the
applications run in 32-bit. This is also called a “32-bit userland”.

The Debian SPARC 64 (a.k.a., “UltraLinux”) porting effort is not
currently conceived as a full porting effort like other ports. Rather,
it is intended to be an add-on to the SPARC Port."

building on sparc does not throw the ugly messages found on alpha, ia64
and amd64. so it could well be that a sparc machine with a 64 bit kernel
can run the 32 bit supercollider happily. can you test this? i will send
a mail to debian-sparc to shed more light on this.

the packages will need to be removed from the pool anyway, so i guess
this is why the bug is still open.

many thanks, paul

I have an UltraSparc 5 (64-bit machine), so I can test this in
principle. It may be a few days though, because it is currently a
firewall running woody, so I'll need to find the time to build a sid chroot.

Yep. Maybe the sparc ones won't need to be removed though. I'll update
you when I get a chance.

Forgot I already had a sid chroot installed on that machine; that makes
life much easier.

Anyway, I don't know anything about supercollider, but it doesn't look
happy:

alcyone[21]:~# sclang
Directory SC_SYNTHDEF_PATH=/root/synthdefs does not exist.
Creating /root/synthdefs
init_OSC
->TempoClock_stopAll 00000000
<-TempoClock_stopAll 00000000
compiling class library..
/usr/bin/sclang: line 23: 27712 Aborted ${SCLANG} $*

Trying "sparc32 sclang" doesn't change anything, and I already have an
existing file /etc/disable_64_gcc.

Could someone try running sclang on a 32-bit Sparc? If it does run
there, then the binary packages for sparc can stay, but maybe a note
should be added somewhere (debian/control?) that supercollider doesn't
work on 64-bit machines, even with a 32-bit userland. Similar tests on
ppc64 and s390x would probably be worthwhile. FTR it seems to be OK on
32-bit powerpc.

The selftest added in -3 also fails on m68k, for example, see [1].

Please research what is going on, and on what architectures it builds
and builds not, and why not on a 32bit architecture like m68k.

Hm, please reassign back when it's clear what binaries on what archs are
broken-beyond-repair, and what not. For now, I really see not enough
info to have a definite list of packages to remove, and doing this job
only halfly is of no help to anyone.

it is rather difficult to get enough info from looking only at the
buildlogs. for the recall, here is the table of the build and a few
additional notes.

         | alpha arm hppa i386 ia64 m68k mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc

* are certainly broken, especially on 64 bit machines. the selftest
never suceeded on these architectures.

! are the only packages that passed the selftest, besides powerpc and
i386 (which always builded fine). i agree these two are suspicious, and
possibly upstream changes included in the 050114 made it worst.

this said, it appears the sound synthesis server of supercollider,
scsynth, should work fine on all these machines and is usable remotely.
the self test concerns only the interpreter, sclang, which is much more
likely to break.

one solution would be to split scsynth and sclang in two packages, and
build only the sclang binary for machines were the selftest suceeded
(i386 and powerpc for now). the selftest would remain to check newer
versions on each platforms.

also, the error like '/bin/sh: line 1: 31641 Aborted' are not of telling
me much. it would help me a lot to be able to access one of the non 64
bits architecture to debug this issue.

suggestions welcome,

cheers, piem
