Description: A roguelike game with an infinite dungeon
NOTE: despite the package name, this is actually UMORIA 5.5.2.
 .
A single player roguelike game with a regenerating dungeon, moria is the
 predecessor of angband with a full-screen, text-based, turn-based
interface. It features scrolling maps, and an infinite (constantly
 regenerated) dungeon.
 .
Moria's dungeons are populated by monsters, some of which are inspired by
J.R.R. Tolkien's books. The goal of the game is to find and kill the
Balrog, whereupon the player is crowned King. Your player can be created
from a combination of 8 races (human, half-elf, elf, halfling, gnome,
dwarf, half-orc, half-troll) and 6 classes (warrior, mage, priest, rogue,
ranger, paladin), and is measured by 6 attributes (strength, dexterity,
 intelligence, wisdom, constitution, and charisma).

Justification: No MU since 2001, no reaction to ping

Hi,

Given that moria is in non-free, orphaned, only a game, and hasn't had an
upload in yonks, I reckon we should remove it.

regards

Andrew

Hello Andrew!

This is no reason for dropping. We should also support non-free software
in Debian.

> orphaned,
But it is in good shape at newest upstream version with no bugs.
Only Standards-Version should be updated.

> only a game,
We need as much games as possible in Debian, even if they are textbased,
I think.

> and hasn't had an

No new upstream version is available since last upload.

> I reckon we should remove it.
Why? You will only save some disk space on mirrors.
It is orphaned for 40 days only. Please give other maintainers some more
time to take it.
There are other packages in really bad shape that should be removed firstly.

Perhaps Rene Weber, who was back from MIA in summer, is interested in taking
it back. He wrote me in June, because he tried to get back as much of his
old packages as possible. But I'm suprized that his devloper page on q.d.o shows
only moria, that is orphaned.
Is he on MIA again?
[CC to him]

Kindly regards,

Erik

Indeed, nor do I expect there ever to be another one (though it's
possible).

No, but I'm transitioning e-mail addresses.
<rene_debmaint@elvenlord.com> is on the way out,
<rene_debmaint@public.e-mail.elvenlord.com> is the future (unfortunately,
this is too long for the DDPO web form, so you have to search by my full
name instead, which will show my other packages).

I decided not to take moria back because I'm already overextended, it's
non-free, and I'm not a good candidate since I haven't played it in quite a
while. On the other hand, it only requires minimal effort to maintain, so I
would consider adopting it again if it's going to be deleted. I haven't
decided what I'm going to do about that yet.

Rene

Hi Robert!

The package is still part of Debian. It was the Debian maintainer that
lost interest in the package. See:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=274472

Apparantly, people still use it, see:

http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?popcon=moria

I'm cc'ing this mail to bug#274472, so that it can be considered by
people wanting to do something with it.

Do you think moria still has a place in Debian? Or do you gather it
might be better removed?

A better question is whether Mr. Koeneke is willing to relicense his
code under a free software license so that moria and angband and
derivatives can finally be free.

Ok, I am working on getting the correct GPL statement put together so this
game on all the games based on it don't have any restrictions to
distribution. It was never my intention to make it hard to share, just to
make certain my name stayed with the game and future variants of it.

Sheesh, I should have gone into game design I guess. I had no idea people
were still playing these games. Did anyone ever add the Moria V5.0 new
features to the game? Liquids (pools, streams, lava, etc), orbs, and
recipes for building magic weapons? There were other things but that's the
stuff I remember off-hand.

In case you can't tell, I am no longer a part of the coding community. I
moved up the corporate chain to the point of all I do is design enterprise
systems; no one lets me touch code anymore.

Enjoy.

If the author changes the license to GPL I will be happy to adopt moria.
I remember reading the thread in devel (I think). Anybody has any news
about this? If no I'll try sending a mail to the author tomorrow.
