Subject: service admin touches all rc symlinks
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 2004 20:21:56 +0200
Package: gnome-system-tools
Version: 0.92.0-1
Severity: normal

I enabled _one_ service using the "Services Settings". One rc symlink
was added but _every_ rc symlink had its modification time updated.
This destroyed all information about when those symlinks were last changed.

retitle 271859 service admin reorders whole boot sequence without asking
thanks

I looked into the issue I originally complained about in #271859 (viz.,
changing of modification times) and I discovered, to my horror, that
enabling one service had changed most (but not all) of the sequence
numbers in most (but not all) runlevel directories!

In this test I enabled service 'alsactl' while I was in runlevel 3. An
S symlink for alsactl was indeed added to /etc/rc3.d/. However, look at
what changed in runlevel 2:

Thomas,

Does this bug affect version 0.90.0-3 of gnome-system-tools in testing?
I'm rather disinclined to check this out for myself on a live system.

The network admin module also has bugs that I consider to be serious. I
would like to see both the service admin and network admin modules
disabled for writing until such time as they have been fixed.

Sorry, but as I can agree with you about service admin module, I have
to disagree you again about network adin module. Of course there is a
bug in this one which should be fixed, but disabling it is mostly a
loss for the novice users, which are the goal of these tools.

Anyway, I'll try yo put in contact with upstream, to talk about this.

 Cheers,

In that case, I think it's best to remove gnome-system-tools from
testing until this is sorted out. I've tagged the package for removal.

I have just uploaded a new version (1.0.0-1) which only contains new
translations for GNOME 2.8 release, disabling service admin tool.
Network tool works fine for an usual end user (which is usually the
user of such tools). Thomas has some powerful network configuration,
which tools cannot cope with right now. As I have said before, I agree
that these bugs need to be fixed.

BTW, take into account that removing g-s-t from testing will break
 gnome meta-package.

 Cheers,

No objections.

I will accept whatever decision is finally made about this. However, I
do wish to express my opinion that novices are not greatly benefitted by
buggy administration tools.

I don't want the best to be the arch enemy of the good. However, I
think that administration tools should meet certain minimum standards in
order to be considered to be of release quality. At a mininum, e.g.,
the tool shouldn't break if it encounters configurations that it isn't
currently competent to manage. This holds especially for tools directed
at novices. It holds especially, too, when the non-understood
configurations are endorsed by the distribution via its man pages and
reference manuals.

Given that there are valid networking configurations that network admin
isn't competent to manage, I think that either

* network admin should be disabled entirely, or
* network admin should be disabled for writing, or
* network admin should be disabled for writing when it finds an
/etc/network/interfaces file that is more complicated than it
  is currently able to understand.

I haven't looked at the source but I would expect that at least one of
the above would be reasonably easy to do.

The version of gnome-system-tools originally closing this report has
reached testing; therefore, I judge that it is in keeping with the
maintainer's intention to close the bug now, since Jose did not remove
the "sarge" tag with the follow-up comments about further changes to the
network admin module. Those bugs may be better addressed with a
separate bug report.

Yes, basically those other problems with network are filled yet as
separate bugs. Or at least I haven't received any other bug from Thomas
complaining. I am trying to take a look at them with upstream.

Thanks
