[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: gnome-gv
Version: 1:2.6.2-3
Severity: normal

I read bug #266223 :-) So please do not merge.

If bug #266223 is tagged as upstream, there should still be following
fixes by the Debian Maintainer.

1. Menu entry should not mention "PDF" in the menu.

You need to update menu file as:
   Wrong: title="GNOME Ghostscript/PDF Viewer"

   Correct: title="GNOME Ghostscript/PS Viewer"
    or
   Correct: title="GGV PostScript Viewer"

(I think this is a good idea even if upstream fix PDF issue since
the upstream README is clear about the fact this is PS viwer and
   recommend GPdf for PDF.)

2. If pull-down menu requires tweek, why not give hint in README.Debian.

Since this package still have pull down menu for PDF, you as a
maintainer should help user a bit more, I think.

I think having README.Debian which documents how to chenge menu entry
for different gs version (gs-*) should help.

Not only gs-gpl as reported in bug #266223 but also gs-esp breaks.

(Sorry, I have not came up with good one to use there yet.)

If the former menu issue is resolved and the latter README.Debian
is not, then I understand this is just wish list bug.

FYI:
gs-esp - The Ghostscript PostScript interpreter - ESP version
gs-gpl - The GPL Ghostscript PostScript interpreter
gs-afpl - The AFPL Ghostscript PostScript interpreter

Hi,

This follow-up corrects errors in previous report and clearly indicates
actions taken on README.Debian. Here you go :-)

This was wrong because proven as following:

> Versions of packages gnome-gv depends on:
> ii gs-gpl [gs] 8.01-5 The GPL Ghostscript PostScript int

So now I know the problem. I tested it too. The README.Debian should be

----
In order for GGV to function for PDF file too, you must install

 * gs-afpl (Latest AFPLed version from Aladin.)
 * gs-esp (Latest GPLed version from ESP with PDF functionality.)

The gs-gpl from Aladin does not have functionality to handle PDF.
----

You may tighten Depends: in debian/control file as:
 gs --> gs-afpl | gs-esp
but it may miss gs-gpl even when gs-gpl become PDF compatible in the
future. I think README.Debian is good enough since this is optional
capability.

Osamu

PS: ESP version is essentially a merged GPL version since new PDF code
was GPL as I heard elsewhere.

Thanks I overlooked that, it'll be fixed.

As I try to remove all leftover PDF funktionality from ggv I think it's not
neccessary to force the user to a specific gs version as all work fine with
.ps files.

Hi,

Before using brute force, please be reminded of the following fact.

On Sun, Sep 12, 2004 at 02:26:49PM +0200, Christian Hammers wrote:

Sounds reasonable by itslf but life is not so simple.

gnome-gv displays Japanese PDF correctly on my system.
gpdf does not display Japanese PDF correctly on my system.

As you may know, Japanese use several encodings. It may be default font
issues but, used with default, gnome-gv is more usable than gpdf.

(Japanese fonts are not accessible from gpdf.
 It seem to force ISO-8859-1)

I see many font related bugs for gpdf and it seems labled upstream.
(Many are old bugs too.)

So removing this functionality from better gnome-gv is bad thing for me
(Yes, xpdf, gv, ... can take care this too but...)

Maybe you can help gpdf :-)

Osamu
