Subject: manpages: nsswitch.conf and host.conf overlap. But how?
Date: Tue, 07 Sep 2004 02:49:32 +0200
Package: manpages
Version: 1.67-2
Severity: normal

Both host.conf and nsswitch.conf can be used to configure the lookup order
for hosts. But which one has priority ? Which one is recommended ?
Both man pages seem to ignore the existence of each other, this is very
confusing.

Hello Marc,

You reported that both of resolv.conf and host.conf can affect the DNS
lookup order. However, I can't trivially confirm this. As best as I
can tell, host.conf can set the preference between bind, hosts, and
nis, and resolv.conf cannot. Indeeed, the only mention of "order"
within resolv.conf(5) is that "nameservers are queried in the listed
order".

Does this bug still apply?

Hi,

/etc/host.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf do not overlap: /etc/host.conf's
"order" line is replaced by nsswitch.conf nowadays.

See http://sources.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2389 for a query
for cleanup in libc.

What should be removed from the manpage is documentation about the
"order" line and RESOLV_SERV_ORDER (since they do not work any more) and
the reference to /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts (and they should rather
be documented in the nsswitch.conf manpage).

Regards,
Samuel

I cannot find which glibc versions uses order line in host.conf before
nsswitch.conf is used.

Together with the fact this change happened ~7 years ago, here is a patch
*removing* the 'order line', and adding nsswitch.conf(5) in references.

In Debian 7 the host.conf(5) man page still describes the "order"
option which has been inoperative for years and still refers to
resolv+(8) which doesn't exist. And it still fails to mention
nsswitch.conf.

Please,

Is there any controversy about this bug? Now it cost me quite some
time, and I guess I'm not alone with that. The solution seems simple
enough and is undisputed, so why not just fix it?

I'd like to add that gethostbyname.3 also refers to the order line in
/etc/host.conf, thus is should be corrected as well.
