Subject: gpm: New debconf configuration does not cope with user's errors
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 2004 10:02:20 +0200
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: gpm
Version: 1.19.6-17
Priority: normal

The old gpmconfig configuration will cope with a common error: it will not
allow the user to mystype the mouse type since it would compare it with the
list of available mouse types. The new debconf configuration makes no
effort to review what the user has introduced and, in the event of a typo,
the configuration will break (since gpm will not be able to start).

A typo might be now more common since the user is first presented with the
list of available options and then is asked (in a new screen) what option
does he want to select without any mention of the possible options. I think
the question dialog should probably be a radio button kind of question
(select one of the list) instead of a free selection (text area). If it
would be implemented this way there wouldn't be any need to check the
user's input.

Regards

Javier

Good point, and thanks for the report.

This is really just a starting point for the debconf thing, though.
The plan is to change it to a box where you select the appropriate
line. We just haven't gotten around to switching it to that yet.

Thanks,
Peter

This bug is about implementing sanity checking for gpm.conf.

Can I suggest merging with 214643,which (despite the title) is about the same.
