If you're running the installer at critical priority, then backing up is
confusing because it takes you down to high priority, which still
doesn't display the main menu; so the Back button often takes you
straight to the screen you were already on, which is confusing.
I've fixed (or worked around) this in our derivative distribution using
the following patch against 0.067, which always drops at least as far as
the priority required to display the main menu:
http://d-i.no-name-yet.com/patches/main-menu.menupriority.diff
I'm not sure this is the ideal fix, though, so I'm filing a bug rather
than just committing this.
Thanks,

I agree, we need to do something about this. Perhaps the patch isn't
perfect, but I just commited it to svn anyway, to get more people to
test it.

Description:
main-menu - Debian installer main menu (udeb)
Closes: 268425
Changes:
main-menu (1.03) unstable; urgency=low
.
NOTE: Not for sarge.
* Petter Reinholdtsen
- Improve the handling of errors when debconf priority limit is
set to critical. Patch from Colin Watson. (Closes: #268425)
* Colin Watson
- Add support for executables in /lib/main-menu.d/, which get run at
main-menu startup. This allows packages to run scripts that need to
share main-menu's debconf frontend but that don't merit a menu item,
such as setting an info message.
