Subject: esound-clients: all sorts of creative failures playing back WAV files
Date: Wed, 18 Aug 2004 00:42:43 -0400
Package: esound-clients
Version: 0.2.34-1
Severity: important

Somewhere between 0.2.29-1 and the version being reported, esdplay lost
the ability to work correctly. The symptoms are as follows:

Occasionally, a monoaural WAV will not work where it did once before.
Attempts to play them thenreturn:
unsupported sound format: 4112
If I open them in Audacity and resave them, they'll sometimes play back,
but at doubled speed.

Some stereo WAVs are also affected. When I attempt to play them, I get:
unsupported sound format: 4128
Opening and resaving in Audacity will cause them to seemingly work.
Sometimes. (It's failed on me once, but it's more reliable than using
the original file).

Sometimes restarting the esd daemon fixes these issues (including the
doubled speed playback, which is REALLY interesting). Sometimes. It's
pretty much a crapshoot, and I cannot for the life of me find any
reproducable circumstances under which it will and/or will not fix the
issue.

I had nothing even approximating these problems with 0.2.29-1, and
frankly I'm flabberghasted as to what could be causing these issues. I'm
submitting this bug report, incomplete and fragmentary as it is, out of
some desperate hope that someone out there will be able to figure out
what's going wrong.

Can you please test the latest esound packages to see whether the
problem you reported in #266515 is fixed?

If it isn't fixed then please check to see whether the problem afflicts
all applications that use esd (e.g., xmms with the esd output selected)
or just esdplay.

(apologies for the delay in replying; life has been very involved lately)

Unfortunately the environment I had under which this bug was occuring
isn't around anymore (it was swapped out for a solution using alsa+dmix,
and then the system in question died prematurely), so I can't really
test anymore. Sorry!

Of course, I don't know how interesting any of this really is,
but now you've got it in your brain cells so you're stuck with it.
