Package: read-edid
Version: 1.4.1-2
Severity: important
Justification: <Overfiend> Kamion: file me an important bug against read-edid at once, please
It looks like the OpenFirmware device tree supports giving out an EDID
block without any of the real-mode messing-around that's required on
i386:
[cjwatson@cairhien ~/src/packages/read-edid/read-edid-1.4.1]$ ./parse-edid < /pr
oc/device-tree/pci\@f0000000/ATY\,JasperParent\@10/ATY\,Jasper_A\@0/EDID
./parse-edid: parse-edid version 1.4.1
./parse-edid: EDID checksum passed.
# EDID version 1 revision 3

Supporting this in read-edid would totally rock. We only need to figure
out a way to find the device-tree location reliably ...

I also appear to have /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:10.0/edid1, which
is likewise parseable by parse-edid. Perhaps this would be a good
portable approach in 2.6-land?

Hmm, forget about that; grepping kernel source suggests that that's only
implemented for Radeons. Shame.

So, given that get-edid probably (?) only deals with the first screen
anyway, and dealing with PCI bus locations is harder work (although
still possible - use the pci<n> devaliases and/or look for appropriate
vendor-id and device-id files, I think), I thought I'd go for the
simplest approach I could see.
Attached is a shell implementation of get-edid for powerpc that just
uses the screen devalias. I'm not sure how standard or widespread it is,
but I do see it mentioned in some documentation on developer.apple.com
so it should at least provide a solution for PowerMacs, and possibly
more.
Cheers,

And here's a complete version, including packaging and a licence:

Thank you TONS!
I will try hard to get to this before the sarge freeze.
If it looks like I won't make it, I hereby authorize an NMU for this.
(I'm wanting to set up a SVN repo first, hence the delay.)

Hi Branden!
I notice that this patch to add powerpc support to read-edid was submitted
in July 2004 already. Could you please merge it? Alternately, If you lack
the time to do it, would you allow an NMU on this one?

Yes, I would allow an NMU.
With great encouragement. :)
read-edid is orphaned upstream, so I'm not really sure it's worth trying to
keep this package around long-term.
But until the X server hardware detection stuff is refactored, ripping it
out would be a bad idea.
Thanks for taking care of this!
