Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: mdadm
Version: 1.5.0-2
Severity: normal
I had some problems with mdadm on a new installation of sarge, mostly
related to using kernel 2.6 and udev, I think. The first problem was
that it didn't detect and autostart the raid array /dev/md1 which was
an LVM physical volume - I now see this may be #231823, but there may be
other problems. I had to manually list it in mdadm.conf as /.dev/md1
because when attempting to open /dev/md1 to perform ioctls to assemble
the array, it didn't yet exist.
The second problem is related, and boils down to the fact that mdadm
runs immediately before lvm2 in the rcS.d sequence. LVM was scanning for
volumes before /dev/md1 had been created by udev, so finding nothing. I
had to create a script to run between them that waits until /dev/md1
exists - which turns out to be ~6 seconds! There is perhaps a more
elegant method to do this - make the mdadm init script do this waiting
(while [ ! -e /dev/mdX ]...), or interact in a better way with udev.
Regards,
Rob

This is an udev "feature" and it should not be worked around in every
other package.
(Please do not bother reassigning this bug to udev, there are others.)

Hi,
this patch fixes (or implements a little workaround) in mdrun to
take appropriate actions when udev is running on the system, creating the
appropriate raid devices.
