Package: developers-reference
Severity: wishlist

Hi,
I'd be nice to have more information about the wanna-build states. I've
run into at least two different developers who believed that the right
way to force a buildd to rebuild a package is to upload new source.

Information about the wanna-build states can be found here:
http://people.debian.org/~wouter/wanna-build-states

A quick list of what to do if a package doesn't build on a buildd might
be nice. Something like:
- Read the buildd logs if available at http://buildd.debian.org
- Wait x days for the original build attempt
- Check if a port is falling behind (where? update_excuses?)
- Check if missing build depends are going to be built later
- Check if missing build depends are failing to build
- Ask in the appropriate port mailing list for help/information
- Upload new source if there's changes in the source code that are
worth building on all relevant architectures (exceptions to this
guildline?)

Thanks,

     Drew Daniels

Please also add a note about <arch>@buildd.debian.org, as it exists,
according at least to Wouter Verhelst[1].

Thanks in advance.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hi,

the information Wouter started to collect is now available on
http://www.debian.org/devel/buildd/

(As part of my NM process Anthony Towns requested me to provide the
documentation requested in this bug.)

To make the above mentioned URL more visible I suggest to put this information
in
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/ch-pkgs.en.html#s-porter-automation
at section 5.10.3.3 and also to create a new section at the of
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/ch-resources.en.html -
I would call it "4.12 Information about the buildd network" which would just
be a pointer to 5.10.3.3.

I would also integrate the checklist from the original bugsubmitter into
section 5.10.4 and rename that to "When your package doesn not build or is
not portable"

What do you think? If you think this is a good idea, I'll happily provide a
patch against the developers-reference source.

regards,
	Holger

Of course. Just provide a patch.

Hi,

sorry, this is the right patch. The first one has the order of changes
reversed, that is added lines have a "-" and removed lines a "+".

Hi,

In the list "A quick list of what to do if a package doesn't build on a
buildd:" I didn't mention to (to me) useful resources, because they are not
official, do you think they should be included anyway:

http://people.debian.org/~igloo/
http://buildd.debian.net

this patch looks good, but if we switch to another xml-format, I would
like to do this switch first, so the application of this patch is a bit
stalled right now.

Thanks for the patch.

Cheers,
Andi
