Subject: xserver-xfree86: XVideo for ATI mach64 skews towards green
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 2004 20:25:24 +0200
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-5
Severity: important

This is a regression from version 4.3.0-7 (4th May 2004) where the XVideo
stuff worked fine on this box.

Now, all videos are tinged green when using xv (xshm works fine). I've
tried this with Kaffeine (xine-based) and mplayer (not from Debian, but
it supports XVideo). Instead of real black, the latest xserver turns
everything green. I've attached photos (screenshots of XV apps don't
work.) An interesting thing is the Kaffeine "take screenshot" command
makes an image between the xv and xshm images.

Subject: The XVideo green skew is *not* a regression
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2004 22:58:14 +0200
So I've done some research on when XV used to work, and it was never with
Debian official releases. Michael Dänzer had put together a version on
XFree86 4.2 with DRI and XVideo patches included and it was *that* version
that worked. His Debian repository is here:

deb http://people.debian.org/~daenzer/dri-mach64-sid/ ./

And he includes source.

I'll gladly accept a (relatively non-disruptive) patch to fix this problem.
:)

I can also see that green skew here.
with xine and mpegplay.

Interesting: If I start two applications, the second one has the right colors.

Also I am also on powerpc.

So I spoke with Marc Aurele La France about this, and he pointed me to
the fix made in XFree86 xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86xv.c
between version 1.37 and 1.38. It's a small fix. The current version of
this file in the DSFG X is 1.35, but this file is specifically licensed
under the XFree86 1.0 license, and is included in the Xorg X server. So
it should be able to be backported here.

Here's the URL to see the diff:
http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86xv.c.diff?r1=1.37&r2=1.38

I think that the "Backport s3 driver from sanitized XFree86" item in
the TODO list would fix this bug as well, because the problem is in
xf86XVCopyYUV12ToPacked(). I was told that this bug would affect any
driver that used these generic xv routines on a big-endian system.

Also, the reason a second video app looks OK is that only one app can
have use XV at a time. The second app fails to open XV, and falls back
to XSHM.

This problem is fixed in 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8. The relevant changelog entry is:

  * Update nv driver and some support code, and grab an XVideo bugfix from
    X.Org CVS as of 2004-09-15:
...
    + Update 000_stolen_from_HEAD.diff:
      - Include xf86xv.c Xv fix for little-endian machines.

There is a problem in the change log in that the fix is for big-endian
machines (the comment says the code assumes a "little-endian framebuffer,"
but it's in the #else clause of a #ifdef X_LITTLE_ENDIAN.

So you can close this bug. I don't know what could be done about the erroneous
changelog.

Frank

Closing as resolved in 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8. Thanks, Frank!

I fixed it in r1919. I obviously can't go back and fix it in the released
packages, but future versions will have a corrected history.
