Hi,
I can't reproduce the error here, even umounting /sys in order to fail
cpufreq kernel interface detection, installation is still ok (that seems
to be the same install path you had). Installing without a CPUFreq
kernel interface shouldn't even try to start the daemon.
A couple of questions:
1- did you upgrade from any older version?
2- are you using ACPI?
3- if so do you have /proc/acpi/battery/*/{state,info} and
/proc/acpi/ac_adapter/*/state (kernel modules ac and battery loaded or
compiled in)
would you send me the output of the following script (it tries to answer
some of the questions above):
-------------8<-----------
#!/bin/sh
echo '************'
if [ -f /proc/pmu ]; then
echo 'pmu found'
elif [ -f /proc/apm ]; then
echo 'apm found'
elif [ -d /proc/acpi ]; then
echo 'acpi found:'
ls -lR /proc/acpi/{ac_adapter,battery}/*
else
echo 'no PowerManagement'
fi
echo '************'
if [ -d /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq ] ; then
echo 'sysfs cpufreq interface found:'
ls -lR /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq
elif [ -f /proc/cpufreq ] ; then
echo 'proc cpufreq interface found'
else
echo 'No CPUFreq'

...I'm a little stuck here...
So you already have a working cpufreqd installed (which version? `dpkg -l
cpufreqd`). Did it came from sourceforge or from the debian archive?
One more test that might be useful is:
- increase cpufreqd verbosity (in /etc/cpufreqd.conf
set verbosity at least 5 or 6)
- restart your old cpufreqd
- try again to upgrade to the new one.
Then send me the linse regarding cpufreqd in your /var/log/daemon.log
(be careful, verbosity=6 or 7 outputs a lot of stuff so be sure to lower
the verbosity value again after the test)
I'm also preparing some test packages trying to fix your problem, would
you mind testing before I upload them to the debian repository?
thanks a lot

I think that if you can start cpufreqd by `/etc/init.d/cpufreqd start`
re-installation will probably work since exactely such command failed
during installation...
I can't understand what went wrong...

ok, so the install script is failing auto-configuration.
Have you ever modified the original configuration?
could you send me your /etc/cpufreqd.conf?
It seems that the pm_type option has been left blank, but cpufreqd
should use the acpi plugin by default.
thanks

hummm... I don't think so. The configuration script hasn't changed. Can
you reproduce the same behaviour by downgrading to cpufreqd-1.1.1-1
(it's in testing) and re-upgrading to sid's version?

did you also purged config files? (apt-get remove --purge cpufreqd or
dpkg --purge cpufreqd)
to reproduce the same situation you should reinstall the previous
version (1.1.1-1 available in testing[1]), restore your original config
file and then upgrade to 1.1.2-1.
Otherwise can you send me you orginal config file? I'll try to reproduce
it here.

aha! I reproduced the bug with an empty cpufreqd.conf :) silly! cpufreqd
doesn't stop with an error saying that no profiles/rules/anything is
defined...
I'm thus retitling the bug and lowering its severity

can you reproduce it easily? Was your config file the default one or did
you changed it?
I can't understand how it happens since the install/setup scripts
haven't changed since 1.1.*

I'm not sure how to reproduce it. It was standard dselect update of
testing.
Hmm, I downgraded to package 1.1.1 and then upgraded to version 1.1.2
again. Now without any problem.
In previous (1.1.1) version, I used default conf, in the updated one I
must used my own.
Hmmm, I purged cpufreqd and install 1.1.1 and than upgraded to 1.1.2.,
no problem now. So I cannot reproduce it now.

I'm sorry, I don't use cpufreqd, but I do see that the version of
cpufreqd in testing matches the version in unstable; so the "sid" tag
was inappropriate, unless you have reason to believe it was caused by a
difference in the testing/unstable versions of another package.
As such, it means that this bug must be fixed or downgraded before
sarge's release, or cpufreqd package will need to be removed.

no... I'm really wondering what happened.
do you have a backup copy of the erased config file? if so could you
send it to me?
also could you show me the output of
tail /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/*
I'd like to try to reproduce the problem here.
Also, do you remember if dpkg asked to install the new config file
during upgrade and what you answered?
the solution I'm thinking of is to completely remove autoconfiguration
from the install script and let the user do the work (based on provided
examples).
thanks

Hi,
did any of you had this problem again upgrading to cpufreqd-1.1.2-2 ?
If not I'll lower the bug seriousness as it is still impossible to me to
reproduce the bug and I only received 2 complaints :)
thanks (please keep the 243649@bugs.debian.org address in the cc-list)

I'm lowering severity then to a non RC. Also: I'm splitting the bug as 2
different issues are present:
1. config file blanking during upgrade
2. cpufreqd segfaults if its config file is empty

Message #126 received at 255855@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
This bug is release critical for me. It's impossible to install the
package at all as the autoconfiguration fails and leaves a blank
/etc/cpufreqd.conf file which then triggers bug where cpufreqd crashes
on a blank config file.
The problem is a race condition in the postinst script. Lines like
cat /etc/cpufreqd.conf |sed -e 's/foo/bar/' > /etc/cpufreqd.conf
fail for me and leave a blank file
I'd propose something like
cat /etc/cpufreqd.conf |sed -e 's/foo/bar/' > /etc/cpufreqd.conf.new
mv /etc/cpufreqd.conf.new /etc/cpufreqd.conf
How you want to do the temporary file name is up to you...
This fixes the problem for me.
Cheers
Andrew Ross

You might consider depending on a recent version of sed and using sed -i;
this makes it easy to do this correctly (preserving permissions, etc.).
