Package: mldonkey-server
Version: 2.5.16-2
Severity: grave
Tags: sid
Justification: user security hole
The package is unable to install itself on a sparc64 system because the posinit script fails with a bus error.
The command provoking the bus error is the mldonkey-users.
This happens only if you setup a password for the admin user in the debconf selection screen.
This leads to either leave the package unconfigured (unusable) if one does set a password,
either do not specify a password for admin user and leaving the mldonkey-server process configurable to anyone.
I was unable to get a backtrace of the stack with gdb (this is supposely because of the OCAML language used).

Hello,
Well your problem is not really coming from mldonkey itself but from
ocaml compiled binary on sparc64. It won't be a "grave" bug since, if
you cannot run ocaml application, you cannot run mldonkey ( ie no
security hole in the program because there is no program ).
I will forward your bug to the debian-ocaml-maint ML since there are
better than me to solve this issue. I also think this bug should be
downgraded to important.
Thanks for the report

Yep, i think so.
In fact there is two part on the problem :
- ocaml in itself ( the bug you are describing is not the first one i
have seen about ocaml apps on sparc )
- C code embeded in ocaml which can have incorrect alignement ( in
particular C functions used to compute hash, the one used in
mldonkey_users ).
The problem is complex, but i don't think it is worth a grave bug ( i
prefer to have one architecture semi broken than a totally outdated
package in Sarge -- it is really personnal since technically i should
shipped mldonkey-server for all arch ). So i think i will downgrade to
important ( for the delay ), and try to see if i can solve the problem.
But i think there is no real solution. ( if it is ocaml compiler, it
should be a big problem for all ocaml package -- which will lead us to
tags all ocaml package to !sparc ( if i remember well ))
Things you can do for me, is try other ocaml software in order to see if
the other runs ( i don't have a list at hand, but you can try hevea,
hlins... ). If the other are running, it is a mldonkey problem.
Do you agree with my solution or do you prefer to let this bug as grave ?
( ie i won't downgrade if you don't agree )

Sorry, I did not receive the first mail.
I tried heveas, and it starts correctly.
I do not know how to use this software but the core is starting correctly
and waits for some kind of input. So it workS.
I am not convinced that ocaml is the culprit....
Would you like to access my machine for testing. I can give you a shell
account to check (U1 143Mhz 96Mo, not a top speed machine).
What we can do is either :
1- Requalify this bug to an ocaml bug (I think the grave status is
appropriate since it is a miscompilation)
2- Create another bug related to ocaml and link this bug to the ocaml one
and downgrade this one.
But before, I would make myself sure that ocaml is really the culprit.

And indeed you are right. I have submitted a bug in the mldonkey BTS in
order to see this... I think it comes from a C code embeded in mldonkey
( hash function ).

Well, i think it would be the best idea -- BUT this bugs is not trivial
at all and require a heavy knowledge on arch things. I could try to
solve it, but i am not sure i will perfom to do it :
- i could inject bad regression ( in the hashing function )
- i could create border effect
- i am not a crypto expert

I agree with : you ocaml is not the culprit, i think it comes from the C
code.
What i can propose to you, is to try working a little on this bug... if
the solution is almost trivial, submit a patch to upstream and applied
it to 2.5.16-3 ?
However, i could not fix all bugs regarding your arch ( sparc64 is not
the most installed linux platform ).
If you feel that this bug is important enough, i could try to take a
look at the code.
I will send you a login/password in a "not forwarded to BTS" mail.
Could you install gdb, and all mldonkey dependency on the machine. I
should have at least the possibility to build mldonkey on your machine.
If i don't perform the bugs correction, i think we have two solution :
- restrict mldonkey ( !sparc64 )
- downgrade the bug ( it is more an important bugs, since it is not a
really security hole, since nothing works ).

Hello,
I permit to send this mail to debian-ocaml-maint ( official place where
debian ocaml maintainer can talk ).
Well, following a strange bus error, Mr Bernard let me log into his
system to try compiling mldonkey...
It seems to be worse than what i think... It doesn't even compile. I get
this error :
/usr/bin/ocamlc.opt -linkall -o ocamlpp.byte -custom unix.cma
str.cma -cclib -lz -I build tools/ocamlpp.cmo
/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/lib/ocaml/3.07/libstr.a when
searching for -lstr
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lstr
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
But it also raises a similar error for unix et al... Just like all the
ocaml library has problem !
The system is :
Linux calypso 2.6.2 #1 Mon Feb 16 01:12:55 CET 2004 sparc64 GNU/Linux
Maybe it comes from the sparc64 arch ?
Is anyone has ever got the same error ?
I am really lost ( i have already compiled ocaml on sparc architecture,
but don't encounter the same error ).

Yep, see Bug#241024 for a similar issue. This is solved by :
Telling ld that I have a sparc32 solves it.

Normal, it is looking for the 64bit str librarie which does not exists.
The incompatible qualifier means mismatch between 64 and 32 bit.

The solution is to prefix the debuild with the sparc32 command which put
the correct environnement variable to generate for 32bits.
So, try to rather do :
sparc32 debuild
instead of
debuild
I forgot to tell you that I was bitten by this bug a few months ago (when
sparc64 maintainers decided that gcc will generate 64bits by default).

Now the next thing to do is :
Can we fix this tiger'thing and make it work ? For so far I remember, I
always got this error when starting the mldonkey server.
Is this helpful (some kind of autocorrection code I think) or can we
disable it for the sparc architecture ?

Well, i think it should be hard to correct the tiger tree computation...
I am not a crypto expert, i am not sure you are... We can try to do it,
but we will never be sure, if it's work for all arch...
What i can propose to you : i will patch mldonkey for your arch only ( i
remember that dpatch support arch specific patch ), and we will append
the patch to the upstream bug...
After this, i will downgrade the bug from RC to important ( because we
only find a work around, but the bug is still there ).
I agree that the best should be to correct it for all arch, but i am a
little afraid by crypto complexity... If you feel you are able to take
this bug, i think upstream will really be happy.

As this bug seems to be Sparc specific and Ocaml also involved can I close this bug here?

Project: mldonkey, a multi-networks file-sharing client
Submitted by: Sylvain LE GALL

Category: Core
Severity: 5 - Average
Item Group: Segmentation Fault
Resolution: None
Assigned to: None
Status: Open
Release: 2-5-16
Release:
Platform Version: Linux
Binaries Origin: Debian package
CPU type: Sparc
Summary: MD4 Hashing seems to segfault
Original Submission: Hello,
I am the debian maintainer of mldonkey.
A user submit me a bug about a debian specific program (
mldonkey_user ) that seems to segfault. This program only
use the MD4 hashing of mldonkey ( in order to compute
user password ).
This program and mldonkey seems to segfault... I think it
comes from the .c files which are required to do hashing.
You can find further information on :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=238686
If you think this only the original program fault (
mldonkey_user ) just let me know, i will try to find a
workaround ( but the program is 100 lines long, and seems
to work fine everywhere else ).
Kind regard
Sylvain Le Gall
