Package: kernel-patch-debian-2.6.3
Version: 2.6.3-2
Severity: normal

This probably should have been reported to kernel-source-2.6.3.
However I only have kernel-patch-debian-2.6.3 installed.

The problem is that most reports at boot time about the eth modules
use %%d instead of the interface number. For example,

    eth%%d: NE2000 found at 0x280, using IRQ 5.
    NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x240: 00 c0 f0 10 eb 56

Isn't this only a matter of an extra % in print formating strings?

The code looks OK. Please send me the ne.o file from your kernel tree.

I should have mentioned that this is not restricted to the ne driver.
On one machine I got:

And on another one:

Will the *.ko suffice? I can't locate ne.o and smc-ultra.o. It could be
that I have clean the tree. Are there *.o files when I compile the
drivers as modules?

With swarm running on 2.6 I just saw the net dev names are
not set correctly. See below.

eth%d: SiByte Ethernet at 0x10064000, address: 00-02-4C-FE-0C-B2
eth%d: enabling TCP rcv checksum

It appears alloc_netdev() assigns this initial name and nobody
later resets it to a more meaningful name.

Any body has a clue here? I don't think it is driver's job though ...

Thanks.

Jun

This affects drivers/net/ne.c, so I'm adding netdev to the cc list.

Same problem, dereferencing net_device->name before register_netdev().
That's caused by a bit toooo quick and sloopy conversion from
init_etherdev to alloc_etherdev & register_netdev.
