It seems that now (not too sure which version it started at) you can't
specify an empty email address via the dpkg-reconfigure program. If you
clear the text box, it gets reset back to root.
As you can see from the debconf info below, it is set to root, but I
definately cleared the text box.
Cheers

I can reproduce this here, but since the wrong value is ending up in the
debconf database, it seems like a debconf problem.

Check and see if you have dialog but not whiptail installed on the box
at work.

It sounds to me as if you are using some other debconf frontend than the
default dialog frontend. Which frontend are you using?

Just the default dialog front-end.
Interestingly I can't reproduce it on the box I am currently on, but it
was absolutely definitely happening on my box at work.

I have the following versions of dialog and whiptail installed. Both
packages are installed due to dependancies.
||/ Name Version Description
+++-==================-==================-=============================
ii dialog 0.9b-20031207-1 Displays user-friendly dialog
ii whiptail 0.51.4-19 Displays user-friendly dialog
Another interesting thing is that if I change the user name for sending
the apt-listchanges output to "crispin", that gets saved fine, but then
if I go through the dpkg-reconfigure dialogs again, and delete "crispin"
from the entry box, it remains. It seems as though something somewhere
is saying "if the value is empty, set it to the current value".
This problem also remains after purging, and re-installing
apt-listchanges.
