Subject: thuban: killed my xwindows session
Date: Wed, 12 Nov 2003 05:06:45 +0800
Package: thuban
Version: 0.9.0-1
Severity: normal

When using thuban, suddenly my screen went black and then I was given
the xdm login screen.

I intended to check the X log files before starting another session,
but ALT CTRL F1, F2 etc. only gave me more xdm login windows, the
normal tty login windows had suddenly become unavailable!

Thus all I could do was log in X again, thus wiping out any old
~/.xsession-errors file. ***the X team should make a .bak of this
file, and put timestamps in it!

As /var/log/XFree86.0.log has no timestamps or backup either, I can't
tell if
(II) SIS(0): vgaHWGetIOBase: hwp->IOBase is 0x03d0, hwp->PIOOffset is 0x0000
(II) SIS(0): vgaHWGetIOBase: hwp->IOBase is 0x03d0, hwp->PIOOffset is 0x0000

(II) SIS(0): vgaHWGetIOBase: hwp->IOBase is 0x03d0, hwp->PIOOffset is 0x0000
are related or hours ago or who knows.

All that is useable is from /var/log/xdm.log:

Hi Dan,

could you please provide some more information about when this error
occured? What did you do before? Is the error reproduceable?

We once had a similar problem when loading very large polygons
i.e. polygons with lots of points. If it was this what killed your
xwindows session it could be the same problem.

Thanks,

	Silke

I use thuban very rarely, so can be of little help this time...

Hi,

It seems that I have the same problem. Thuban sometimes killed my X
server. Thuban first got unresponsive, then some seconds later, X
itsself got unresponsive.

However, I am not shure whether this is a bug in thuban alone, as no X
application (especially when working through wxWindows and GTK layers)
should be able to crash the X server.

I'm using XFree86 4.3 from experimental (as my mobile radeon doesn't
work with 4.2 releases).

I can try to go into further investigations on this topic.

Thanks,
Markus

This is true for sure, but it doesn't make any sense to contact the
XFree-people with the message: the X server is crashing sometimes.
So it would be nice if you could create a reproducible suite of
actions which lead to the crash. This could probably help us and/or
the XFree-people to reproduce the bug.

This would be really fine. The most important would be to reproduce
the bug. Do you see any chance to identify when this bug occurs?

Thanks,

	Silke

Hallo,

There hasn't been any more information about this bug for quite a
while and there hasn't been any simliar information on the thuban
bug tracker either. Hence it seems that this problem doesn't exist
any more. Therefor I will close this bug.

If there are any objections please reopen the bug and explain why.

Many greetings,

	Silke
