Subject: coreutils: Please add a Provides: stat

Package: coreutils
Version: 5.0-5
Severity: normal

coreutils replaces stat and conflicts with it. But it should also
Provide: it. In fact it does (stat shipped only /usr/bin/stat, the
manpage and the required stuff under /usr/share/doc/). And it would
make dependency handling easier for packages that use stat: Now they
have to depend on "coreutils|stat" which, of course, makes lintian
complain. Or one has to check [ -x /usr/bin/stat ] and work around it
if it isn't there.

Thank you,
Frank

No, it shouldn't. The only dependency on stat that existed at the time I
created the coreutils package was versioned, an there's no versioned
provides--so adding the provides wouldn't have helped.

No, right now they don't have to depend on anything because coreutils is
essential and will be in the next release, and it's unlikely that any
new package will go into woody. If you're trying to target a local
package for woody you will need a "coreutils|stat" depenedency.

Of course not into woody. But it makes life easier for
backporters. If I leave out the dependency on stat, the dependencies of
my package netenv can be easily fulfilled on woody. But it won't run if
stat isn't installed. Of course the package is meant for sarge+, but I
would consider it cleaner to be able to indicate that stat is needed.

Besides, I'm not sure wether there might be upgrade scenarios where
somebody (or something) tries to upgrade coreutils after other packages.

However, if you're not willing to add that Provides:, just tell me, and
I'll close the bug. Reluctantly, but I will ;-)

Bye, Frank

If you want to do that, fine, add the compound dependency.

We don't support partial upgrades, and the package management tools will
upgrade essential packages first.

It's already closed.

lintian doesn't like this, because it's against (the wording of) the
policy to have a non-versioned Depends on an essential package. So I
thought having a Provides would be the nicest solution. If it isn't nice
for you, well, I'll have to find a different way.

Yes, this wasn't realistic. Things can go wrong, but not that way.

I got the two mails in reverse order...

Thank you for your work on coreutils!
