Package: lists.debian.org
Severity: wishlist
Name: debian-kernels
Rationale: A list to facilitate the maintenance of Debian kernels (linux, bsd, hurd).
Like the debian-gcc and debian-glibc lists, bug reports (and
VCS messages) would go there as well as general
discussion of kernel and patches maintenance, porting etc.
The main goal is cohordination of all kernels related packages.
Short description: Debian packaging of kernels and kernel patches.
Long description: Discussion on Debian packaging of linux and non-linux
kernels and available patches and flavors: bug
reports, porting issues, any kind of questions or
patches.
Category: developers
Subscription Policy: open
Post Policy: open
Web archive: yes
It has been already proposed in -private and -devel with good interest
and general approvation. This is coherent with existent debian-gcc
and debian-glibc.

Hi,
At this point in time the listmaster team feels that there is
no need for this list. We cannot see the demand for it, or the
discussion that would occur on it. In particular, we would like to see
if any of the current debian kernel maintainers feel this is a worthy
list.
If you agree with this, please consider closing this bug
report, otherwise please provide us with more people to second this
list's creation, and links to discussions that should have taken place
on this list but couldn't because this list didn't exist.
Regards,
Pasc

Well, the main point, is that there is no communication open between the
different kernel maintainers. And, well, as i am the powerpc kernel
maintainer, and i asked for the creation of such a list, don't you think
that this respond to your question ?
Also, communicating with herbert over normal mail is a difficult thing,
since he sets is reply to to his other address, which considers my isp
as a spammer, despite this not being the case, so ...

I don't really agree with this, i think it would be usefull for a list
where all kernel maintainers are subscribed to, and where one could
benefit from the questions, interogations of all the others, and where
we could plan for improvement of kernel-package together.
But then, i am only one kernel maintainer, i have no idea if the others
are also interested, nor who most of them are.
Friendly,
Sven Luther

[ Sorry for bothering all of you with this mine, but I'm simply contacting
people involved in kernels hacking (also non specifically for debian) in order
to know your thoughts about this issue: that's the debian-kernels ML
proposal. Please answer on BTS ]

That's exactly the point why I asked for creation of that list.
There is not simply a single point of communication for debian-specific
kernels-related issues. The same for available/possible patches and
port-related kernel issues.

Absolutely yes. But I'm the proposer for the list and my idea about
is clear. We have already this kind of cohordination list for gcc and
glibc, I see no reason to leave kernels (both linux and hurd)
to personal sporadic communications and BTS.

And that's one of the problem. But for Herbert and Manoj, that's not
immediate visibility on who works on what for kernels related packages.

The discussions which should have taken place on this list generally
took place in private mail copied to an (outdated) list of a dozen
platform kernel maintainers.
I think it's a good idea. But then, I'm an example of why there should
be a list - I no longer maintain the PPC kernels, Sven does. But when
people need to notify all the kernel maintainers of something they
still often contact me instead.

Hi,
I think this list would be a nice idea. We also should invite
in people maintaining module packages for debian, to be better able
to coordinate cooperation between image and module packages.

Ah, hadn't thought about those, but naturally, being a module maintainer
also myself, i believe this would indeed be a good idea too.
Thanks manoj.

Hello,
I have just created the debian-kernel list:
Discussion about kernels used with Debian (Linux, Hurd,
etc.), available patches and flavors, packaging issues,
bug reports, porting issues, automated tools, and any
other questions or patches that are kernel-related.
Enjoy!
