Subject: grace: libtiff dependency is unnecessary
Date: Tue, 21 Oct 2003 12:15:22 +0200
Package: grace
Version: 5.1.13-1
Severity: minor

There is no need to depend on libtiff for Debian builds of Grace. The
TIFF library is only needed for the PDF driver which is disabled (since
PDFLib is not entirely free).

after removing the libtiff-dev from Build-Depends grace will compile
without an error in a clean chroot environment. But when I try to
compile it on my usual desktop the configure script still detects
libtiff and the Makefile links against the library. That is why I think
the pristine grace sources should be fixed, too.

Torsten

You're right, and there is a comment in configure.in:

dnl **** TODO: undefine unneeded libraries

But doing so in general is a dirty business ;-).

However, when Grace is ./configure'd with --disable-pdfdrv (as is the
case with the Debian package, I believe), the tiff library shouldn't be
looked for.

Evgeny

No I do not use the --disable-pdfdrv to make it easier to rebuild the
Debian package with pdfdrv support when people need it. But usually I
recommend using epstopdf to create PDF files because it is free. Maybe I
will disable pdfdrv for the next upload in about 5 days - that is the
time to get the current version into testing.

Ah, indeed, sorry. But I'm pretty sure it was used in the past... In any case,
the tiff dependency is solely for pdflib, which, until late versions, didn't
have a working "pdflib-config" script, so a kludge workaround had to be
implemented.

BTW, it occurred to me that the "xlibs" dependency is redundant, too, since
Lesstif is in the list.

Regards,

Evgeny
