* Package name    : gmasqdialer
  Version         : 0.99.13
  Upstream Author : David Pinson <dpinson@materials.unsw.edu.au>
* URL             : http://www.dpinson.com/software/gmasqdialer/
* License         : (GPL)
  Description : gtk/gnome client for masqdialer server

From the freshmeat description:
 GMasqdialer provides a GNOME/GTK client for the Masqdialer system. The
 masqdialer system provides a user-friendly cross-platform method of
 controlling a masquerade box's modem connection from any computer on a
 LAN.

The masqdialer server is packaged but none of the clients are. This
package will resolve that issue.

How about "client for masqdialer"?

Which is it, GTK only or GNOME?

You might want to define what a 'masquerade box' is.

The problem with calling it just that is there are many more clients for
masqdialer than just this one, like the qt/kde client, the cli client,
the java client, which may be packaged in the future. The major
difference between these clients are the toolkits/desktop environments
they are designed for.

It originally had GNOME panel support, but that is currently removed for
the gtk2 port. I believe there are plans to restore this functionality
in the future. I would have no problem with removing GNOME until/if it
becomes a GNOME application again.

My currently built package (for woody at the moment) has the following:

Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>= 1.0.1), libc6 (>= 2.2.4-4), libglib2.0-0 (>=
2.0.1), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.0.2), libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.0.1)

So it doesn't look like the current package is using the Gnome libraries
at all.

How about appending the, rather good I think, description from the
masqdialer package:

Description: gtk client for masqdialer
 This package contains a gtk masqdialer client
 for debian. The masqdialer system is designed
 to provide easily accessible control of
 multiple dialout modem connections to the
 members of a LAN using IP Masquerade for their
 internet connectivity.

That distinction should be put in the long description then, not the
short description.

At which poin you should s/GTK+/GNOME/ - both shouldn't be in the description
at the same time.

...so long as it's properly wrapped to 80 characters.

Ok, maybe an example of why this is bad is needed here, imagine this scenario,
I'm using apt-cache search to find a web server I want. So I do apt-cache
search webserver. With your suggestion we would get results like this

apache - a web server
boa - a web server
roxen - a web server
thttpd - a web server

I think it's pretty obvious that this makes the short description pretty
worthless. We would have the same problem with masqdialer clients:

cmasqdialer - client for masqdialer
gmasqdialer - client for masqdialer
jmasqdialer - client for masqdialer
qmasqdialer - client for masqdialer

Instead, I would like to see something more useful to the user like this:

cmasqdialer - command line client for masqdialer
gmasqdialer - gtk client for masqdialer
jmasqdialer - java client for masqdialer
qmasqdialer - qt client for masqdialer

This allows the user to much more easily choose the one they want, instead of
guessing what the letters in front of the name might mean.

I am requesting a sponsor for the gmasqdialer package. Gmasqdialer is
a gtk client for the masqdialer system, making it easier for dial-up
users to share a connection on home and small office lans.

The masqdialer package, the server component of this system, was added
to Debian but no clients have yet been added. The addition of this
package to Debian would address this issue.

The ITP for this package can be found here:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=215103

I have repositories setup for this package here:

deb http://moria.seul.org/~lexicon/debian ./
deb-src http://moria.seul.org/~lexicon/debian ./

Or you can simply browse them here:

http://moria.seul.org/~lexicon/debian/

There is obviously no interest for getting this package in Debian, so I
am closing this ITP. It appears that as masqdialer is only useful for
dial-in users, and most Debian users are getting broadband and/or
persistent connections, there is very little interest in making this
system usable for end users. I will continue to maintain the existing
packages at the current location for as long as practical.
