From my build log, with libgdbm-dev installed (which, according to
packages.debian.org, is the only package providing dbm.h):

checking for dbminit in -ldbm... no
checking for dbminit in -lgdbm... no
checking for dbminit in -lndbm... no
configure: error: *** Unable to locate DBM library.

The dbminit symbol is defined in -lgdbm_compat.  (Or, if it previously
linked against libdb1, that needs to be corrected.)

Hi,

the attached patch addresses the aforementioned bugs. Since both of them
are quite ancient, I'll do an NMU according to the current accelerated
RM's schedule.

(Consider running autoconf additionally - this is a housekeeping issue
left for the maintainer.)

DBM is not actually used for anything in GRASS and can be left 
out of ./configure without losing any functionality. 

New versions of libgdbm cause problems for GRASS anyway.
