Package: libgdbm-dev
Version: 1.8.3-1
Severity: normal
On an unstable system:
[typhoon;/usr/include]-18> objdump -t /usr/lib/libgdbm.a| grep
'\<dbm_open'
and on a stable system:
[klecker;~]-1> objdump -t /usr/lib/libgdbm.a| grep '\<dbm_open'
00000000 g F .text 0000015c dbm_open
looks like libgdbm_compat is not linked into libgdbm, even though
04_fix-gdbm-compat-linking.dpatch is applied.

Err, that's because it's in libgdbm_compat.{a,so}?

That's not the point of that patch; that patch fixes libgdbm_compat so
that it links to gdbm (since libgdbm_compat uses functions from gdbm).
libgdbm isn't meant to be linked to libgdbm_compat; that was the whole
point of separating gdbm_compat out, so that applications using the
modern (relatively, at least) gdbm interfacte wouldn't have to also
have the added baggage of the legacy dbm interface.

Followup-For: Bug #200799
Just a short-term suggestion for those playing along at home:
Setting up the following link gets me past my current ./configure woes,
with regard to this "bug".
ln -s /usr/lib/libgdbm_compat.so /usr/local/lib/libdbm.so
(and add /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf & run /sbin/ldconfig)

Now these interfaces (gdbm, gdbm-compat) are separated at binary package
level.
