I can not fit the default client window in 800x600 with Window Maker.
It is 52 pixels too tall. The default client window fits fine when I
use my locally configured GTK 1.2 version.

Can you try making your default gtk2 font smaller? The default app font
might appear quite big in that resolution.

I have no idea how to make my GTK 2 font smaller, and after doing some
searching, I don't want to find out. I'd like to help, but this doesn't
seem to be a particularly time-efficient way.

The difference appears to be mostly not in the font size. The
difference appears to be in the size of the map window, scroll bars,
turn done button, unit information panel, and other tiny things.

Oh, it's in Freeciv's Debian readme.

I adjusted all the font sizes down by two (so it's mostly at 8).

Now the window is only 35 pixels too high.

Well, it's not much different than in GTK 1. You can change your theme
and use another one with smaller widgets than the default.

I'm sorry Tom, but I just took upstream's direction, and that takes us
to GTK2 (besides I and a big lot of people prefer the GTK2 version).

I investigated this but couldn't get anywhere. Could you please point
out how I can use GTK 2 with widgets that are about the same size as the
default ones in GTK 1.2?

Probably using the same theme for GTK1.2 and GTK2. There are a few that
support both versions. I haven't tried this myself as I don't use GTK1.2
apps anymore, but it should be like that.

For example, there's gtk-engines-thinice and gtk2-engines-thinice.

Upstream rearranged things to fit in 800x600 in 2.1.9 (r15566), and
added an option to arrange things better for small displays in 2.1.10
(r15683, <http://gna.org/bugs/?13524>).

I think this can probably be closed now?

2.1.10 not fitting correctly on my 1024x768 screen, once its loaded
past the initial screen. I'll have a look at the bug report linked and
see if i can reearange stuff so it fits.

I added 'small_display_layout=1' to .civclientrc, and tried
using '/small_display_layout' on the player choosing screen pre game.
Neither of these options made my freeciv layout change.

Am I using this setting incorrectly?

Hmm. I was just going by the descriptions in SVN. I admit I'm not
actually using the Debian package but the upstream version; nor am I
actually using it on Debian (I'm on Ubuntu Jaunty). However, there don't
seem to be many Debian-specific patches.

I just downloaded the upstream 2.1.10 release and tried the Gtk client.
While the initial and pre-game windows I see are 674x565 (probably OK
for 800x600 and smaller than they were), the actual game window can't
usefully be resized less than 674 wide or about 720 high -- the top
section with the map doesn't get any smaller so you can't have a message
window. So, this configuration is no good for 800x600 (OP) or 1024x600
(netbooks). However, I'm surprised you're having trouble at 1024x768; if
you see what I see it should be tight but usable.

However:

> I added 'small_display_layout=1' to .civclientrc, and tried
> using '/small_display_layout' on the player choosing screen pre game.

The latter won't help because that's how you set server options and this
is a client option. The former might work, but what should definitely
work is, once you have a game going, go to Game > Local Options >
Interface > "Arrange widgets for small displays" (at the bottom). You
need to restart after setting this and saving the setting.

When I try this, it gets better: the window seems usable down to about
674x600, so I think you could play on 800x600 or 1024x600 (although I
haven't tried it). The difference is that the chat/messages area is
moved to the right, allowing the civ/unit info column to grow down into
the vacated area. The limiting factor on height becomes the point where
the selected units disappear off the bottom.

The situation is about the same in the latest upstream 2.1.x and
2.2.0-RC1 code, FWIW.

Not many, and hopefully shrinking :)

I've put a png here [1] you can have a look at (it'll only be there
for a few days probably, unless you need it to stay there). I'm running
2.1.10 on debian stable.

ok. That fits quite comfortably. I'll try it on a smaller screen when i
get freeciv 2.1.10 rebuilt for mipsel.

When i shrink the window down as far as it'll go it still seems almost
square (not inherently a problem i guess), and the chat window is
partially coverd under a scrolling section (like the image at [1]
above).

I've tried this on a lemote yeeloong. its got a 1024x600 screen
(according to xrandr), and its still falling off the bottom of the
screen. it looks like its only by about 10 pixels or so - i expect its
because it can't shrink enough for gnomes two pannels. (2x24 pix, top
and bottom of the screen).

Thought I'd update this bug,

I'm testing 2.2 final on my Yeeloong (1024x600) in 'small screen mode'.

Its still to big, both windowed *and* full screen. :( The only way to
make it fit is to detach the map and chat widgets.

Any thoughts on how to move forward from here?

I've just been playing with the various options in the S2_2
development code (soon to become 2.2.3). I haven't checked 2.2.2;
there have been some tweaks in this area since then.

The smallest window I was able to achieve was about 789x557 (but that
doesn't include window furniture, e.g. title bar). That was with the
following combination of options:
"Arrange widgets for small displays" set
"Merge the message notebook and the map notebook" set
"Split bottom notebook area" *not* set
This was on a big desktop system with no attempt made to optimise font
sizes, etc, so perhaps it could be made even smaller.

And I've actually played Freeciv (single-player) in reasonable comfort
on an Eee 901 (1024x600) -- this was trunk code, but I don't think
it's significantly different in this regard. With regards to the GNOME
panels, we run with a single panel vertically down the left of the
screen; it's quite usable and makes a surprising amount of difference.

I think we're probably reaching the limits of what's possible here; we
seem to be more or less below 800x600, and 640x480 looks pretty
hopeless (sorry Eee 701 users). It's certainly a lot better than it
was. Any point in keeping this bug open?

Hi Jacob,
I've changed some of those options in our packaging, so 2.2.1 and 2.2.1
and on should have them.
I'm yet to test it completely. perhaps when i do an update of the
packaging to 2.2.3 i can test properly.
