Right. At first at thought I was another victim of #109420,
especially because it only happened when _reloading_ the cache after
an apt run, and not consistently at that. But strace results were
authoritative, and indeed after I installed tasksel (for which I have
no use) it stopped.

Can you tell me how to reproduce this?

Daniel> Can you tell me how to reproduce this?

1/ purge tasksel
2/ enter aptitude
3/ set up a complex apt job (ie. select many packages for purging,
many for new installation or upgrade)
4/ g g

it will run the job fine, reload the cache, and exit (status 1) after
that.

Again, it is not entirely consistent. I don't know what is the
decisive factor, unfotunately. Maybe touching a package that belongs
to a task?

this same thing happens to me, though i have never connected with
tasksel. for the record, i have never had tasksel installed.

its not consistent with me, but i would have to say it happens with a
jobs that are large, like mentioned above.

I wasn't able to reproduce it, but the symptoms sound exactly like the
other elusive crashing bugs. I believe that the apparent connection
with tasksel is some sort of coincidence or luck.

i will compile aptitude with debugging symbols and run it with gdb for a
while to see if i can get some more info.

Note - it is _not_ a crash in the strict sense (there is no signal).
aptitude makes a controlled exit with non-zero status.

I don't think there's any "strict" definition of crash that you can
appeal to. The most official one I can find is the Jargon File, which
defines it as "a sudden, usually drastic failure" or "to fail suddenly",
both of which seem to apply in this case.

It might not be a segfault or another signal-triggered termination,
but I wouldn't even be too confident in stating that -- aptitude
installs handlers for fatal signals so it can shut down cleanly, and one
of those could be triggering. (it could even be that something is going
awry inside those signal handlers)
I'm not going to make any assumptions until I get some solid evidence
about what is going wrong.

Does it restore the screen state?

Okay, but what counts as "solid evidence"? I don't think you can get
closer than an strace log.

No it doesn't, good point.

  Hm, ok.

Then it's probably not exiting at any place where exit() is called in
the code. When I was debugging this earlier, it seemed like a call to
exit() (or maybe _exit()) was somehow being spontaneously generated,
maybe due to some sort of stack problem. As I recall, though, memory
debuggers didn't help.

One suspicion I had was new() failing due to OOM. Maybe you could
redefine the global new() to just print an easily recognizable message
before giving up the ghost?

Turning these off has no effect - crashes still occur under the same
circumstances.

And I still can't reproduce it. I even ran aptitude for months on
this computer without tasksel until someone asked me to look into some
task-related bugs.

I still don't see this bug. Much of aptitude's code base has been
modified since it was reported, and several nasty crashing bugs have
been fixed. Closing it to clear out the bug list a little.
